standard scale is laid down for hut-sizes, depending on the number of occupants, and huts are usually built by contractors at prices ranging from $2.50 to $3.50 a sq. ft., according to the locality. Apart from the basic amenities provided by Government, the larger areas may contain schools, welfare centres and clinics, supplied and run by charitable or religious organizations. Most areas have a number of shops operated by former squatters. These licensed areas have replaced the former resite areas, whose last remnants were still being cleared at the end of the year.

43. During the year 19,614 people were resited into licensed areas. Those resited comprised:

21.57% atd.

1,616 victims of natural disasters and fires;

631 tenants and rooftop squatters from condemned buildings; 505 compassionate cases;

4,208 boat squatters;

3,607 homeless people remaining on sites after clearance operations;

7,570 squatters from demolished illegal structures;

1,477 persons of other categories, mainly from squatter affected by tenement re-development and unauthorized persons evicted from estates and cottage areas.

LIAISON UNIT

44. The Liaison Unit of the Squatter Control sub-division was established on 1st December. Its aim is to develop a closer relation- ship between the Government and squatters through liaison with squatter representatives and the administration of a local public works programme. Five local public works projects were completed during the year, and ten other projects were in progress at the end of the year. The projects approved were mainly the construction of footpaths or erection of protective wire fences.

CHAPTER 4

CLEARANCE OF SQUATTERS

45. The Clearance Sub-division of the Operations Division is headed by an Administrative Officer and is responsible for planning and executing the squatter clearance programme.
