These figures relate only to those people whose areas were finally cleared before the end of the year whereas those in para. 17 above refer to people actually occupying premises in estates by the end of the year, i.e. those who have already paid their rent and moved into estates but whose premises had not been finally cleared. Moreover, some of the 19,000 people reaccommodated owing to overcrowding of their original resettlement rooms were among the 23,000 additions to families made during the year. A total of 1,149 squatter and authorized temporary factories, workshops and shops were cleared, involving the allocation of 1,880 resettlement factory units and 609 resettlement estate shop/workshop premises.
