at Shek Kip Mei, Sau Mau Ping Site 'B' and Shek Lei, while 16.40 acres (4,372 squatters resettled) were cleared for low-cost housing at Kai Lung Wan, Kennedy Town, Aberdeen and Yau Tong. 1.34 acre was cleared of 2,035 people for non-public housing schemes.
42. 16.13 acres were cleared to provide sites for seven schools and a garden, involving the clearance and resettlement of 7,577 persons. 24.90 acres were cleared for new roads, widening of existing roads and various drainage and reservoir schemes, while 66.29 acres were cleared to provide sites for public buildings. 25,570 persons were resettled in these clearances for public works. 79.15 acres (26,842 people) were cleared for sites for land sales and development, and 27,831 persons were resettled from land not required for development: these were mainly from resite areas, but also included victims of fires or natural disasters, and pavement dwellers. The programme of resettling boat squatters from typhoon anchorages continued: 14,699 boat squatters were resettled from typhoon shelters in Cheung Sha Wan, Shau Kei Wan, Chai Wan and Tsing I. 244.24 acres of land were cleared during the period under review: of this, 27.49 acres were under cultivation, the ex-gratia compensation for which amounted to $938,789. The most striking increases during the year were in respect of clearances from resite areas, from land required for public works, and of boat squatters. Altogether the Clearance sub-division cleared for resettlement 112,832 people, of whom 1,869 were compassionate cases, and the remaining 110,936 were land or boat squatters from development or resite areas, or the residents of cottage areas required for development. (The total of 108,000 quoted in paragraph 11 is lower because of the time-lag between the completion of clearance operations and the taking up of residence of those concerned).
