in the clearance area, that is squatters who had moved into the area just before, or during screening and who were not eligible for resettle- ment; and there were 2,000 unauthorized occupants living in the cottage area who were also not eligible for resettlement. 8,056 persons were resettled from the clearance, the majority in Wong Tai Sin Estate, and 23 small factories were offered accommodation in the resettlement factory at Jordan Valley Estate. The imposters and the unauthorized residents of the cottage area were persuaded to leave the clearance area before the final date of clearance. Some 700 of the latter moved in a body to Sha Tin Pass road where they squatted by the roadside and at first refused to move; they were finally dispersed in January when they either accepted sites at the Jordan Valley resite area or moved to other accommodation that they had found for themselves. $612,037 was paid as ex-gratia compensation to the owners of cottages that were cleared from the Resettlement Area. The clearance provided sites for 9 multi- storey blocks which will accommodate approximately 20,000 persons.

36. Between 18th December and 31st March 9,484 persons were cleared from the site of the new Wang Tau Hom Estate which lies to the north of Lo Fu Ngam Estate. The majority of the structures were wooden huts built in terraces on the hillside and occupied mainly by a Chiu Chow community. These squatters were resettled in Kwun Tong Estate; after some initial hesitation they accepted this comparatively remote location readily enough. The total area cleared was 45.5 acres; 4:66 acres of this was under cultivation and $134,000 was paid as ex- gratia compensation to 96 cultivators. The new estate will have 26 'H' blocks with accommodation for approximately 55,000 people.

37. In addition to these clearances for new estates there were three clearances for extensions to existing estates, at Chai Wan, Li Cheng Uk and Kwun Tong. The first involved the clearance of 16.8 acres for Stage II of the estate, which will provide sites for 6 'H' blocks and one 'T' block. This was mainly a cultivation clearance and $110,800 was paid as ex-gratia compensation to 60 cultivators. The two other clearances were on a smaller scale providing sites for two additional blocks each at Li Cheng Uk and Kwun Tong Estates.

38. 3,825 persons were cleared from Cheung Sha Wan to provide. sites for two new five-storey and one single-storey resettlement factory. The clearance area included one of the department's resite areas and 1,952 of the persons cleared were squatters who had previously been resited. Nine small saw-mills and six miscellaneous factories were resettled in Jordan Valley flatted factory block. The new flatted factories
