of Mr. P. B. Williams who was transferred to the Colonial Secretariat. Mr. TAN Boon Cheok also joined the Department in July and became Resettlement Officer, Operations.

In August, 1957, the post of Accountant/Secretary held by Mr. D. Barton, was split into two separate posts. Mr. Barton was appointed Accountant and Mr. J. V. G. Mitchell, previously Officer-in-Charge Screening Section, became the Secretary. Mr. CHUNG Ching succeeded Mr. Mitchell as Officer-in-Charge Screening Section. During this month Mr. Li Fook Kow left the Colony on study leave and the duties of Planning Officer were shared by the Secretary and by the Resettlement Officer, Roof- tops, Mr. G. C. M. Lupton.

In September, 1957, the post of Planning Officer was abolished, and the duties were taken over by the Resettlement Officer, Rooftops, whose title was changed to Resettlement Officer, Headquarters.

In November, 1957, Mr. J. V. G. Mitchell left the Colony on vacation leave and was succeeded as Secretary by Mr. R. Thompson. During this month Mr. John Ng also joined the Department and became the Executive Officer (Finance), Resettle- ment Administration Office.

Finally in May, 1958, the writer of this report succeeded Mr. A. St. G. Walton as Commissioner for Resettlement.

136. Preliminary steps towards the formation of a Departmental sports association were taken in 1957 and on 6th February, 1958, the Association was formally constituted and registered by the Registrar of Societies. A grant of $500 from welfare funds was approved on 25th February, 1958, by the Colonial Secretary for the purchase of sports equipment.

137. Membership of the Association, which will eventually provide facilities for field and track athletics, badminton, miniature football, tennis, table tennis, basket and volley ball, is open to all staff of all grades in the Department. Initially, a subscription of $2 for six months is being charged.

138. Friendly games were played frequently during the year between teams drawn from different sections of the Department and these produced some very keen competition.

139. The steady progress of this Association has been and will continue to be encouraged.
