58. The total area of cultivated land cleared during 1957/58 was 16.882 acres, for which ex-gratia compensation amounting to $459,750.87 was paid.

59. A summary of the clearance and resettlement operations during the year is attached as an Appendix to this Chapter. Of the total of 17,915 persons cleared, 15,191 (84.85 per cent of the total) were cleared in order to free 42.11 acres of land for permanent development, and 2,724 (15.15 per cent of the total) were squatter fire victims cleared from temporary huts on the streets and pavements. The total number of separate clearance operations was seventy six.

THE MULTI-STOREY ESTATES

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

60. The destination of the lorries taking families from a squatter area on moving day will nowadays almost always be a multi-storey estate. On arrival there the head of household presents his letter of authority to the estate office and in exchange receives his rent card on which his room number and the amount of rent due for the first month has already been entered. He then pays his first month's rent at the
