The Construction Unit's work falls into four main categories: maintenance and new construction work carried out by its own labour force; the preparation and supervision of contracts; rainstorm protection work; and the preparation of surveys and plans for cultivation clearances and for sites for schools and welfare centres to be allocated to voluntary agencies. 85. The contracts let to private contractors during the year included those for 50 aqua-privy units, 21 bath-sheds and for a welfare centre at Ngau Tau Kok for the Social Welfare Office, most of which were nearing completion by the end of the year. The most important items of new work completed were the formation of a jeep track at Tai Woh Hau and of an access road at Tai Woh Ping, both of which were then surfaced by the Public Works Department; two Area Officer's quarters and two sub- stores; temporary offices for the Mobile Resettlement Unit and the Rooftop Squatter Prevention Section; and the formation of 665 more sites for cottages.
