(30.3%) were on Hong Kong Island, 13,397 (63.4%) in Kowloon and New Kowloon, and 1,340 (6.3%) in the New Territories. Table XLI gives the numbers of registered deaths by sex and age group during the five years 1968 to 1972.
187. In relation to the statistics in Table XLI it is advisable to bear in mind that the ages of some of the older members of the com- munity may have been given according to Chinese reckoning. However, the District Registrars use their best endeavours to ascertain the correct age, and the figures given for the various groups are thought by and large to be accurate.

188. Table XLII shows the number of registered deaths in 1972 by accident and suicide classified by cause, sex and age group. This reveals that 1,655 people died by accident or suicide as follows, the 1971 figures being given in brackets:
