171. Table XXXII gives particulars of work done during the year and of the fees charged therefor, which totalled $325,555 down by $35,135 from the 1971-72 figure.

BIRTHS AND DEATHS REGISTRY

172. The registration of births and deaths is compulsory under the Births and Deaths Registration Ordinance. The General Register Office is situated at Li Po Chun Chambers, 92-97 Connaught Road Central, and there are nine District Registries on Hong Kong Island and seven in Kowloon and New Kowloon. In the New Territories there are 'full-time' Birth Registries at Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Tsuen Wan and Yuen Long, and also 'part-time' Registries at various Rural Committee Offices, which District Registrars visit according to a regular programme. Deaths in the New Territories are reported to local police stations. In addition to the above, three mobile teams operate in the New Territories dealing with applications for post- registration of births. Table XXXIII shows the present organization of the Registry.
New Registries in Sheung Shui and San Po Kong
173. On 22nd May 1972 a 'full-time' birth registry was opened at 26 San Fung Avenue, 1st floor, in Sheung Shui, replacing the 'part- time' registry in the Sheung Shui Rural Committee Office. A new district birth registry on the 6th floor of the San Po Kong Government Offices providing birth registration facilities for New Kowloon, east of the railway line, was opened on 26th June 1972, and on the same day the Kowloon Deaths Registry moved from Sung Wong Toi Road to premises on the 5th floor of the San Po Kong Government Offices. The San Po Kong District Births Registry shares its premises with the new marriage registry referred to in paragraph 156.
Births Registered
174. The number of births registered in 1972 was 79,053, com- prising 77,076 Chinese (39,731 male, 37,345 female), and 1,977 non- Chinese (1,049 male, 928 female). Table XXXIV gives the number of
