Deposits by Fire, Marine and Life Insurance Companies

97. The deposits made by 61 insurance companies with the Registrar of Companies under the Fire and Marine Insurance Com- panies Deposit Ordinance were valued as at 31st March 1972 at over $10.32m. and those made by 48 companies under the Life Insurance Companies Ordinance at over $7.24m.

Trust Companies

98. No trust company was registered under Part VIII of the Trustee Ordinance so that the number of trust companies on the register remained at three.

Money-lenders

99. 69 money-lenders were registered under the Money-lenders Ordinance, 23 more than in 1970-71. The fee for such registration is $500 per annum. The exemption from registration granted to The Hong Kong Building and Loan Agency Limited, the Commonwealth Development Finance Company Limited and The Malayan Finance Corporation Berhad were still effective.

Chinese Partnerships Ordinance

100. At the end of the previous year there were 22 partnerships on the Register. Only one of these had been registered since the war (in 1959-60), the other 21 having been registered before 1935. As it appeared that none of the partnerships was any longer in existence, the Ordinance was repealed during the year.

Limited Partnerships Ordinance

101. This Ordinance, which applies only to such partnerships as in the opinion of the Registrar of Companies can properly be described as non-Chinese partnerships, (Chinese partnerships being registrable under the Chinese Partnerships Ordinance until it was repealed-see the preceding paragraph), enables partnerships to be registered between one or more general partners liable for all the debts of the firm and one or more limited partners liable only up to the amount contributed by them to the partnership. Three such partnerships were registered during the year, raising the total number registered to 31, of which only 12 are believed to be still in existence.
