Table XV gives an analysis according to the nature of business of the 433 companies dissolved or removed from the register during the year and also of the aggregate total of 1,767 for the five years ended 31st March 1972. The main casualties were as usual in import and export companies, which lost 137, while land investment companies lost 48, textile manufacturers 23, restaurants 19, engineering etc. companies 18, and garment manufacturers and shipping companies 16 each.

83. With 3,953 new companies, one restoration and 433 dissolu- tions, there was a net increase of 3,521 in the number of companies on the register, which on 31st March 1972 stood at 22,514, comprising 1,413 public companies (mostly companies limited by guarantee), and 21,101 private companies.

84. The number of documents received for filing and the number of inspections of files by the public rose to the new record figures of 60,687 and 58,326 respectively. These figures represent increases of about 14.7% and 8.5% over the corresponding figures for 1970-71.

85. Although under no statutory obligation to do so, the Com- panies Registry sends reminders in respect of failures to file Annual Returns and other documents within the prescribed periods, and every year publishes advertisements calling attention to the statutory requirements. On the incorporation of every new company the Companies Registry supplies it with a pamphlet entitled 'Notes on certain provisions of the Companies Ordinance with special reference to documents which have to be filed in the Companies Registry'. A copy is also supplied free of charge to any company that asks for

one.

86. 785 companies increased their nominal capital by amounts totalling over $2,932m., on which fees of over $5.86m. were paid.

87. 392 companies changed their names by special resolution and with the approval of the Governor given by the Registrar General or an Assistant Registrar General under delegated powers. One of the main reasons for such changes is that, as mentioned in paragraph
