199. An Industrial Design and Trade Mark Research Mission from Japan, comprising eight members, visited the Department on 24th February 1969 and discussed in general terms questions dealing with the administration of the Trade Marks Ordinance, the law relating to the registration of patents in Hong Kong and also the law relating to registered designs. The Mission also paid a visit to the Trade Marks Registry where the Registry procedures were explained to them.

200. On 10th April 1968 Mr. W. K. THOMSON, O.B.E. retired from the post of Registrar General after nearly 10 years in that post and more than 20 years in the Department, and was succeeded by Mr. W. HUME, formerly Assistant Registrar General. On the same date Mr. P. JACOBS, formerly Senior Solicitor, was appointed Assistant Registrar General, and on 22nd April 1968 Mr. S. D. OATES, formerly Solicitor, was appointed Senior Solicitor. Mr. I. A. REID, Senior Solicitor, acted as Assistant Registrar General during Mr. J. A. H. TILLEY's absence on vacation leave from 26th July 1968 to 28th January 1969, and Mr. N. M. GLEESON, Senior Solicitor, acted as Assistant Registrar General from 9th March 1969, when Mr. P. JACOBS proceeded on vacation leave.
201. The Department commenced the year five short of its approved establishment of sixteen Solicitors/Assistant Solicitors. Three new Solicitors, Miss J. C. SMITH, Mr. R. HENDERSON and Mr. P. F. GRINDEY, joined the Department, and two serving officers, Mr. C. LEE Yeh-kwong and Mrs. M. POON YAU Choi-pak, were appointed Assistant Solicitors after completing their studies and being admitted as Solicitors in England. However, at the end of the year the Department was still three short of its approved establishment because of the promotion of Mr. S. D. OATES and the departures of Mr. J. H. SANDERS and Mr. J. P. ANDERSON on completion of their contracts.

202. The Department has a Photographic Section equipped with a Photostat machine Model 4 Type P, capable of copying plans, docu- ments registers, etc. up to four feet by three feet in size, a Verifax
