Over the last five years there has therefore been an apparent increase in the amounts of charges subsisting of $2,109m., but some of this no doubt relates to companies that are in liquidation or have been dissolved.

Companies incorporated outside the Colony

81. 46 companies incorporated outside the Colony established a place of business within the Colony and complied with the provisions of Part XI of the Ordinance. At the end of the year there were 609 such companies registered as compared with 600 the year before. Table XVI shows the countries in which these 609 companies are incorporated. The United States leads with 161 companies, and is followed by the United Kingdom with 93, Japan 63, Panama 38, Singapore 34, Switzerland 27, Australia and China 24 each, Canada 20 and Malaysia 19.

82. Table XVII gives an analysis of the 609 companies to which the preceding paragraph refers according to the nature of their business. This shows that the total includes 123 import and export companies, 79 insurance companies, 44 shipping etc. companies, 42 banks, 36 carriers (air and land), 35 religious bodies, 30 engineering etc. com- panies, and 26 land and building companies.
