192. A Trade Marks Mission from Japan, comprising six members, visited the Department on 26th February 1968 and discussed in general terms problems associated with alleged infringements of Trade Marks and Patents registered in Hong Kong by Japanese companies. The Mission also paid a visit to the Trade Marks Registry and inspected the systems in operation for registration of Trade Marks and for classify- ing registered Trade Marks.

193. Table II lists the holders, both substantive and acting, of the principal appointments in the Department during the year. Mr. W. HUME acted as Registrar General from 30th April to 14th May during Mr. THOMSON's visit to Hawaii, and Mr. P. JACOBS acted as Assistant Registrar General in charge of the Land Office from 5th June to 8th November during Mr. HUME's absence on vacation leave.

194. To assist in the onerous task of winding up The Canton Trust and Commercial Bank, Ltd., an additional Legal Assistant post was approved with effect from 1st April. The Department commenced the year five short of its approved establishment of sixteen Legal Assistants/ Legal Assistants (Pupils). Two new Legal Assistants, Mr. R. H. CHECKLEY and Mr. N. JAMES, both English solicitors, joined the Depart- ment, together with two new Legal Assistants (Pupils), Miss Ruby Yu Yee-luen and Mr. Job YoUNG Jee-keung. Unfortunately, these acces- sions were balanced by departures. Mr. P. MURPHY and Mr. D. E. PLATTS both returned to the United Kingdom on completion of their contracts, Mr. F. G. KEIL was seconded to the Legal Department and subsequently transferred to that Department at the end of the year, and Miss Ruby Yu Yee-luen resigned on marriage. The Departmental Secretary, Mr. KWAN Tai-yan, was transferred to the Housing Authority and was replaced by Mr. W. J. BARRY, who arrived from the United Kingdom on 4th October on temporary transfer from the Home Civil Service.

195. On 11th January it became known that Mr. W. K. THOMSON would be retiring as Registrar General later in the year. Mr. THOMSON, who joined the Department shortly after it was first established in 1949 and has been Registrar General since 1958, was awarded the O.B.E. in 1965 for his very valuable services to the Colony. Mr. THOMSON'S long experience of the work of the Department, and his high intellectual
