As will be seen, deaths by accident declined by 81, but there were unhappily 36 more suicides, an increase of 10.25% over the previous year's figure. The numbers of deaths by accident or suicide over the past five years have been as follows:

As compared with the previous year the number of both male and female deaths by accident decreased, but there were more male deaths and fewer female deaths by suicide.

176. Full statistics of the causes of the deaths registered may be found in Tables 12 and 46 of the Annual Departmental Report of the Director of Medical and Health Services.

Re-registration of Births and Deaths

177. The Births Registration (Special Registers) Ordinance and the Deaths Registration (Special Registers) Ordinance provide for the re- registration of births and deaths recorded in registers destroyed or lost during the Japanese occupation. 165 births were re-registered during the year, and altogether 5,590 births and 66 deaths have now been re-registered under these two Ordinances.

Adoptions

178. An Adopted Children Register is maintained at the General Register Office under the Adoption Ordinance. Table XLIII shows the relationship of adopters to the children adopted under the Adoption Ordinance in the past five years with figures for the first 5 years from 22nd July 1957 (date of first entry in the Adopted Children Register) to 31st December 1962 shown in brackets. The numbers of adoptions over the past 10 years have been as follows:
