During the year the Board inquired into and approved the applications of twenty-one auditors and eleven auditing firms for admission to Part I, and of sixteen auditors and nine auditing firms for admission to Part II of the Authorized List. At the end of the there were 198 individuals and 74 firms on Part I of the List and 164 individuals and 62 firms on Part II. Of these, 134 individuals and 58 firms were on both Parts. Out of the 198 accountants on Part I of the List 149 were Chinese.

Fees

97. The total of all fees collected by the Companies Registry under all Ordinances was $1,600,393, a reduction of $995,000 compared with the previous year's total. This year's total was made up as follows (with the previous year's figures for comparison):

TRADE MARKS REGISTRY

98. The Trade Marks Ordinance is based on the United Kingdom Trade Marks Act 1938. The Register consists of two parts, Part A for distinctive marks, and Part B for marks which are not registrable in Part A but are capable of distinguishing the goods of the applicant and have been used in Hong Kong for not less than two years. Registration in Part A gives full rights of protection, in Part B modified rights. Registrations are valid for seven years, but may be renewed indefi- nitely for further periods of fourteen years. Defensive and certification trade marks may be registered, and a person other than the proprietor of a mark may be registered as a registered user. The procedure and forms to be used are set forth in the Trade Marks Rules.
