transact life business, 144 fire, 134 marine, and 92 motor vehicle third party risks business. The 201 companies include four which commenced doing these classes of business during the year. Most of the foreign companies operate through agents, but some have established their own branch offices in the Colony.

Deposits by Fire, Marine and Life Insurance Companies

88. The deposits made by 49 insurance companies with the Registrar of Companies under the Fire and Marine Insurance Com- panies Deposit Ordinance were valued as at 31st March 1968 at $7,794,214 and those made by 31 companies under the Life Insurance Companies Ordinance at $5,275,679.

Trust Companies

89. No trust company was registered under Part VIII of the Trustee Ordinance so that the number of trust companies on the register remained at three.

Money-lenders

90. Thirty-nine money-lenders were registered under the Money- lenders Ordinance, one less than in 1966-67. The fee for such registration is $500 per annum. One order of exemption from registration was made by the Governor in Council under Section 6(d) of the Ordinance, namely in respect of the Commonwealth Development Finance Company Limited. The exemptions granted to The Hong Kong Building and Loan Agency Ltd. and the Malayan Finance Corporation Ltd. were still effective.

Chinese Partnerships Ordinance

91. There are 22 partnerships on the Register, only one of which has been registered since the war (in 1959-60). The other 21 were registered before 1935, and appear to be no longer in existence.

Limited Partnerships Ordinance

92. This Ordinance, which applies only to such partnerships as in the opinion of the Registrar of Companies can properly be described as non-Chinese partnerships (Chinese partnerships being registrable under the Chinese Partnerships Ordinance see the preceding para- graph), enables partnerships to be registered between one or more general partners liable for all the debts of the firm and one or more
