Government for public purposes and with regrants of land. Many of the remaining surrenders were free surrenders of portions of scavenging lanes being taken over by the Government. Only in a relatively small number of cases, mostly having to do with street widening, was anything paid by Government for the surrender. The total amount of compensa- tion paid for surrenders of land in 1966-67 was $3,004,397, less than one-fifth of the total of $16,189,906 in 1965-66.
Re-entries upon land by Crown
53. Under the provisions of the Crown Rights (Re-entry) Ordinance, land may be re-entered upon by the Crown for the breach of any covenant in the Crown lease thereof, or for the breach of any con- dition or stipulation of any tenancy thereof, by the registration in the Land Office of a Memorial of Re-entry signed by an officer duly authorized by the Governor. The land is thereupon re-vested in the Crown, but the lessee may petition the Supreme Court or the Governor in Council for relief against forfeiture.
54. During 1966-67, 39 urban lots were re-entered upon by the Crown, 38 for non-payment of premium and one for non-payment of Crown rent, 14 of these lots were held under Conditions of Sale, 24 under Conditions of Regrant and the remaining one under a Crown lease. 55. After petitions made by the former lessees to the Governor in Council for relief against forfeiture, re-entries on two urban lots were cancelled upon payment of arrears of premium and interest, and administrative and Land Office registration fees.
Naval, Military and Air Force Lands
56. The Land Office maintains registers of all lands held by the Admiralty, War Department and Air Ministry, and is responsible for preparing all documents relating thereto. The outstanding event of the year under this head was the announcement of the major changes in policy with respect to the provision of land required by the Armed Services.
