SUMMARY

Functions

THE Registrar General's Department comprises the Land Office, the Companies, Trade Marks, Patents, Marriage, and Births and Deaths Registries, and the Offices of the Official Receiver in Bankruptcy and Companies Winding-up, the Official Trustee, and the Official Solicitor in Lunacy. With the exception of the Companies, Trade Marks, Mar- riage and Births and Deaths Registries all these Offices and Registries are, along with the Headquarters of the Department, located on the 6th and 11th floors of the Central Government Offices, West Wing, Lower Albert Road, Victoria. The Companies and Trade Marks Regis- tries, which were formerly located in the Central Government Offices, moved on 28th December 1965 to more spacious accommodation on the 9th and 10th floors of Kayamally Building, Queen's Road Central. The locations of the Marriage and Births and Deaths Registries are given in Parts VIII and IX relating to these Registries.

Staff

2. At the end of the year the establishment of the Department consisted of the Registrar General, two Assistant Registrars General, four Senior Legal Assistants, thirteen Legal Assistants, two Senior Assistant Registrars, thirty-five Assistant Registrars, one Senior Execu- tive Officer, two Executive Officers and 257 other officers. There was also a supernumerary staff of one Deputy Registrar General, one Senior Legal Assistant, two Legal Assistants, ten Assistant Registrars and twenty-three other officers. Table I shows how this staff, permanent and supernumerary, totalling 354 officers, was distributed among the various Branches of the Department on 31st March 1966.

General Review

3. Despite the prolongation of the British Government's surcharge on all imports except foodstuffs and the continuation of the banking crisis into the early part of the year, the statistical evidence available at the end of the year pointed to a continued rise in the general standard of living during the year.
