57. As mentioned in last year's report Aberdeen Inland Lot No. 163 was re-entered upon by the Crown and a petition by the former lessees to the Governor in Council for relief was rejected but with the direction that ex gratia compensation of $160,000 should be paid to the former lessees. Subsequently one of the three former lessees forwarded through his solicitor to the Land Office a written authorization purporting to bear the signatures of himself and those of the other two lessees and requesting payment of the $160,000 to the solicitor. A check of the signatures against those on the original Conditions of Sale relating to this lot revealed an apparent discrepancy in the signatures of the latter two lessees. The case was referred to the police for investigation, and the ultimate result was that the applicant pleaded guilty to charges of having uttered a forged document with intent to defraud and was sentenced to four months' imprisonment, though the sentence was sub- sequently reviewed and changed to a fine of $1,000. The ex gratia compensation of $160,000 was finally released to the three former lessees through their Solicitors.
