Registrar General Annual Report 華民政務司 註冊總署 年報 All

There was a decline in the numbers of applications accepted and marks registered, the former falling by 62 (12%) to 1,299 and the latter by 363 (23%) to 1,200, of which 1,166 were registered in Part A and 34 in

Part B.

101. Table XVII gives the number of marks registered in each of the thirty-four scheduled classes, and Table XVIII shows the countries of origin of the applications for the 1,200 marks registered. In each case the previous year's figures are included for comparison. As compared with 1962-63 there have been reductions in the numbers of registrations in most classes. The seven countries from which most applications were received were Hong Kong (365), the United States of America (205), the United Kingdom (183), Japan (118), West Germany (86), Switzerland (48) and Canada (25). This is in the same order as the four preceding years except that Canada has displaced Italy from seventh place. It is, however, noteworthy that whereas the number of registrations for the three leading countries dropped substantially, the number for Japan rose from 95 to 118, considerably narrowing the gap between it and the United Kingdom.

102. 872 marks were removed from the Register for non-payment of the registration renewal fee, and 4 cancelled at the request of the registered proprietors. The total number of marks on the Register on 31st March 1964 was therefore 19,371 comprising 2,875 re-registered pre-war marks and 16,496 new marks.

Oppositions

103. Twenty-seven oppositions were pending at the beginning of the year, and eleven further notices of oppositions were received during the year. Six oppositions were withdrawn, and seven opposed applications were abandoned, leaving twenty-five pending at the end of the year. Oppositions rarely go to a hearing before the Registrar; usually one side or the other withdraws, or the parties arrive at some compromise arrangement acceptable to the Registrar.

Statistics

104. Part I of Table XIX gives statistics of applications, registrations, renewals, removals and cancellations, for the ten years 1954-55 to 1963–64, and Part II gives statistics of miscellaneous other work done during the year with the corresponding figures for the previous year. It will be seen from Part I that there have been reductions in the numbers of renewals and removals, the former having dropped from 1,875 to 1,540
