Owing to the great activity in the property market the Land Office search area described only last year as being spacious was frequently over-crowded, and it is apparent that it will, like the Strong Room, soon have to be expanded.
Stamp Duty
12. The total amount of stamp duty paid on instruments registered reached the record figure of $21,350,000, over $8,000,000 more than in 1959-60. The increase was mainly due to the larger total of considera- tion in assignments.

Crown Leases
14. Owing to extreme pressure of other work it was found necessary to restrict work on the preparation of Crown leases to those cases where for one reason or another it was important that the lease be issued as a matter of urgency. There were therefore only 67 Crown leases issued during the year, the smallest number since 1947-48. The lots for which the leases were issued were of the following categories:
