purposes. 7,000 Verifax copies were produced from 2,100 matrices. Fees amounting to $13,652.75 were collected in respect of copies of public records supplied to the public. These fees are included in the figures for the fees of the branches supplying the copies.

Personnel

91. Mr. Ronald Henry MUNRO, LL.B. (LOND.), Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Judicature in England, was appointed Deputy Regis- trar General with effect from 4th February, 1960, on transfer from Kenya where he had also been Deputy Registrar General. Mr. C. M. STEVENS, who had been appointed to act as Deputy Registrar General on 26th October, 1958, continued to act as such until Mr. MUNRO'S arrival on the 25th February, 1960. Mr. STEVENS was subsequently appointed Senior Legal Assistant with effect from 1st July, 1959, and Mr. S. A. FOWLER, who had been Assistant Registrar in charge of the Land Office since 1952, was appointed Senior Assistant Registrar as from the same date. Mr. Edward Gerard SOUSAE, Solicitor, Supreme Court, Hong Kong, was appointed Legal Assistant on probation and joined the Department on 16th September, 1959.

92. Mr. S. S. TAN, Assistant Registrar Class I, returned on 30th July, 1959 from the Overseas Services Training Course B which he attended at Trinity College, Oxford University.

93. Two senior members of the Department who had given long and faithful service to Government retired during the year. These were Mr. A. L. COLE, Assistant Registrar Class I, who had been for many years in charge of the Companies Registry, and Mr. Fox Ping-fai, who had been the senior clerk in the Trade Marks Registry since it was re- established after the war. Welfare

94. The Departmental Charitable and Benevolent Fund, in the third year of its existence, is supported by voluntary contributions from members of the staff of the rank of Class I clerks and above. $50 was given to charity, $51 spent on books for the Library, and $142.30 on Table Tennis equipment and Tournament prizes. The Fund amounted to $678.90 at the end of the year. A wireless and gramophone have been installed in the Library, and the staff are encouraged to make full use of the facilities in this pleasant room.
