Re-registration of Births and Deaths

67. The Births Registration (Special Registers) Ordinance (Cap. 175), and the Deaths Registration (Special Registers) Ordinance (Cap. 176), provide for the re-registration of births and deaths recorded in the registers which were destroyed or lost during the Japanese occupation. 303 births and five deaths were registered during the year. Altogether 3,868 births and fifty nine deaths have now been registered under these two Ordinances.

Adoptions

68. An Adopted Children Register is maintained at the General Register Office under the Adoption Ordinance, 1956. The first entry was made in the Register on 22nd July, 1957, and on 31st March, 1958, the number of adoptions registered totalled fifty one.

Vital Statistics

69, The Births and Deaths Registry is responsible for the collection and compilation of vital statistics for the Colony. The Hollerith system is used for collecting and compiling statistics of mortality, and informa- tion is recorded by means of punched Hollerith cards, covering the age, sex, marital status, nationality, occupation, place of residence, place of death of the deceased, and also the cause of death, whether the body was sent to a mortuary, and the registration number of the attending doctor.

Fees

70. The fees collected during the year totalled $193,864 as compared with $161,996 in 1956/57. Particulars are given in Table XXI.
