according to the new classification, and Table XII shows the numbers registered in each of the new classes. Table XIII shows the countries of origin of the applications for these marks.

39. Seventy Marks were removed from the Register for non-payment of the registration renewal fee, and three cancelled at the request of the registered proprietors.

40. The total number of marks on the Register on 31st March, 1958, was 14,157, consisting of 3,400 re-registered pre-war marks and 10,757 new marks.

Oppositions to Registration

41. Nine notices of opposition to applications for registration were received. Three oppositions were withdrawn, two opposed applications were abandoned, and the remaining four cases were pending at the end of the year.

Miscellaneous

42. 232 marks were registered as Associated Trade Marks. 142 registrations were renewed. 225 changes were made in the names and addresses of registered proprietors. 138 persons were entered as sub- sequent proprietors of marks by assignment or transmission, 124 with goodwill, fourteen without. Seventy seven applications for registration of Registered Users were received, and seventy six Registered Users registered.

43. With a view to reducing the time taken on searches work has begun on a new Card Index of all Marks on the Register in accordance with the system of sub-classification in use in the Patent Office, London. 3,580 marks had been so indexed by the end of the year.

44. Table XIV gives statistics of registrations, renewals, etc., for the ten years 1948/49-1957/58.

Fees

45. Fees collected during the year amounted to $121,964.25, which is $11,780 more than the previous year's figure, and the highest total ever received.
