The fees collected totalled $21,265. The number of leases issued during the year in each category is shown in Table III.

Surrenders of Crown Leases.

7. There were 134 Deeds of Surrender to the Crown com- prising 155 lots or sections of lots, the total amount paid by Government in respect of such surrenders being $2,081,585. Most of this amount was in respect of the purchase by Government of Peak Mansions, Victoria Peak, for the sum of $2,000,000.

Fees.

8. The total of fees collected in the Land Office excluding the fees collected in the District Land Offices, was $393,038.00, $7,841 more than the figure for last year. In the New Terri- tories, Land Registration Fees collected through the District Land Offices amounted to $35,877.70, in addition to which Crown lease fees totalling $210 were received.

Crown Rents.

In the year under review there was an increase of 507 in the number of lots on the Principal Rent Roll, bringing the total to 16,758; and the total amount of the Rent Roll increased by $78,347.04 to a figure of $1,566,147.97. Table IV gives the particulars for each district, the principal increases being 223 Inland Lots on the Island, and 184 Kowloon Inland Lots and 53 New Kowloon Inland Lots on the mainland.

10. The Village Rent Roll summarized in Table V now contains 1,800 lots, 2 less than in the year 1955/56, and the total Crown rent under this head is now only $1,178.

11. The Crown rents of 326 sections of lots were determined under the Crown Rents (Apportionment) Ordinance (Cap. 125), the fees paid amounting in all to $4,643. Apportionment of Crown rent under this Ordinance is a procedure which enables the owner of a piece of land forming part of a larger area held under a Crown Lease to have his proportion of the total Crown rent payable for the whole area determined, and thereafter to
