MARRIAGE REGISTRY

Marriages Registered.

14. During 1954/55, 3,715 marriages were registered under the Marriage Ordinance (Cap. 181). This is the largest annual total ever recorded, exceeding by 764 the previous record number registered in 1948/49. Of the 3,715 marriages, 3,411 were between Chinese and 3,136 took place at the Registrar's Office. The increase in numbers may be ascribed in part to the at- tractive new Marriage Room described in last year's Report. Details are given in Table VI.

Fees.

15. The fees received totalled $38,074.00, also the highest figure ever recorded. Particulars are shown in Table VII.

Comparison with previous years.

16. Table VIII shows the numbers of marriages solemnized and the total amounts of fees collected during each year since the war with for comparison the average figures for the years 1935/39.
