10. The Village Rent Roll summarized in Table VI shows that the total number of village lots has decreased from 1,879 to 1,819, due principally to the reduction of the number of Shek O Lots from 307 to 250. This was the result of Government's terminating a number of annual tenancies on Shek O headland with a view to granting 5-year leases at economic ground rents. The Rent Roll has decreased by $6.40 to $1,185.10.

Street Index Unit.

12. There being a strong public demand for a compren- hensive and up to date Street Index of the Colony to replace the last edition issued in 1938, a Street Index Unit consisting of Mr. T. W. R. Wilson, temporary Assistant Registrar Class I, and three temporary clerks was formed in July, 1953, and attached to the Land Office to undertake the heavy task of revision. The work entails the close examination of a very large volume of Land Office records including the Memorials of all deeds registered at the Land Office since January, 1938, and all Crown Leases granted, and Conditions of Sale, Grant, Exchange, etc., issued since that date. By the close of the year, 68,199 Memorials of deeds had been examined, and 8,731 Index Cards prepared in respect of new or revised entries registered, It is estimated that the task of revision should be completed by 31st March, 1955.
