Searches and Inspections of the Register of Trade Marks.

29. During the year ending 31st March, 1954, 567 searches were made in the Register of Trade Marks on requests by the public, under Trade Marks Rule 81, to ascertain whether there were any marks on the Register which resembled the marks submitted with such requests. These searches are usually preliminary to applications for registration. 841 inspections of the Register were made by the public under Section 7 of the Trade Marks Ordinance (Cap. 43).

Applications and Registrations.

30. The number of applications for the registration of Trade Marks under Section 12 of the Ordinance was 1,238. 1,018 applications were accepted, and leave granted to advertise them in the Gazette. 1,012 Trade Marks were registered, an increase of 76 on the previous year's total. The Classes in which these 1,012 marks were registered are shown in Table X. The countries of origin of the applications for the registration of these marks are given in Table XI.

31. 42 Trade Marks that were on the old

on the old (pre-war) Register, which was lost during the Japanese occupation of the Colony, were registered in the new Register under the Trade Marks Register (Reconstruction) Ordinance (Cap. 262)—making a total of 3,154 such marks already registered in the new Register.

32. 21 Trade Marks were removed from the Register for non-payment of the registration renewal fee, and two at the request of the registered proprietors.
