MARRIAGE REGISTRY

Marriages Registered.

13. The number of marriages celebrated in the Colony during 1953/54 was 2,828, of which 2,541 were between Chinese. The corresponding figures for the previous year were 2,348 and 2,032 respectively. Particulars are given in Table VII.

Fees.

14. The total amount of fees received was $28,474-an increase of $5,227 as compared with 1952/53. Particulars are shown in Table VIII.

Comparison over ten years.

15. A comparative Table is appended covering the period of the last ten years for which records are available, and showing for each year the numbers of marriages solemnized and the total amounts of fees collected. (Table IX).

Registry alterations.

16. In February and March, 1954, extensive structural alterations to the Marriage Registry were carried out, resulting in the floor space being approximately doubled by the in- corporation of an adjoining room. The portion of the Registry in which marriage ceremonies are celebrated has been entirely re-designed and attractive lighting and furnishings introduced. The impressive appearance and design of the new Marriage Room have elicited very favourable public comment.
