The meeting adopted a constitution approved by the parent Society in London, and formed an interim Council to hold office until a General Meeting should be held. The following were elected to the Council:- President: Dr. J. R. Jones; Vice-Presidents: the Hon. Sir Tsun-nin Chau and Dr. L. T. Ride; Hon. Secretary: Mr. J. D. Duncanson; Hon. Treasurer: Mr. T. J. Lindsay; Hon. Editor of the Journal: Mr. J. L. Cranmer-Byng; other Councillors: Dr. Marjorie Topley and Messrs. James Liu, Holmes Welch, and G. B. Endacott. The Inaugural Meeting of the revived Branch was held on April 7, 1960, in the Loke Yew Hall of Hong Kong University. It was to have been presided over by H.E. the Governor, Sir Robert Black, K.C.M.G., O.B.E., had illness not prevented it. The Inaugural Address was delivered by Professor F. S. Drake, Professor of Chinese at Hong Kong University, on "The Study of Asia: a Heritage and a Task”. This, then, is its second Annual General Meeting. We can confidently say that the initial success of the first year has during the year that is past been well sustained and that the Society has been placed on a solid foundation for the future. At the end of the first year—1960—we had 182 members. Of these 20 were life members, and their number included several eminent scholars from overseas. By the end of the second year—1961—a total of 278 members had been enrolled. Of these one died, four resigned, and seven left Hong Kong. There were left 25 life members and 241 ordinary members, making a total of 266 and an increase of 84 during the year. I hope, however, that this gain in membership will not be affected by the delay on the part of 59 members in paying their subscription of $20 for 1962, and a note has been sent out to remind those who have overlooked this modest contribution due three months ago. It would greatly help the Society if members would be good enough to give a banker's order for their subscriptions. It would not commit any member to continuing the subscription longer than he wishes but it would save members themselves the trouble of writing cheques or paying cash each year, and save the Hon. Treasurer and the Hon. Secretary, who are very busy people, the burden of much correspondence which should be unnecessary. It would also be a matter of satisfaction and encouragement if more members would evince their interest and support of this Royal Society by becoming life members. At present there are only 25. There must be many more than 25 in this prosperous Colony who would, I am sure, be prepared to pay $250 for a life membership and, as His Excellency Sir Robert Black, our patron, said a year ago when he presided over one of our meetings, "there are many times 200 people who are interested both in the cultural life and history of this part of the world, which has great riches to offer to anybody interested in research or in studying and enquiring about the inheritance which we all enjoy who live here". ================================================================================ RASHKB Journal 皇家亞洲學會香港分會學刊 | RAS-1962 https://digitalrepository.lib.hku.hk/catalog/9s166f47f Nevertheless the monthly meetings of the Society have been consistently well attended with audiences which often have more than filled this room and have averaged well over one hundred at each meeting. This regularity of attendance proves that there is in the Colony a reliable cross section of the community who appreciate what Professor Drake referred to in his inaugural lecture as the Study of Asia and our heritage. In the earlier days of the Society up to 1859 when the Government of the Colony provided a home for the Society and its library it was honoured with the presence on its Council of the Governor, the Commander of the British Forces, the Chief Justice, the Bishop of Victoria, the Colonial Secretary, the Colonial Treasurer and the Attorney General, and it had the active support of the heads of the great merchant houses like Jardine, Matheson and Co. and Dent and Co. Although in these busier days we miss the successors of some of these eminent personages we are still honoured today by the patronage of His Excellency the Governor and the support of leading members of a more cosmopolitan community than in the earlier days. We particularly appreciate the keenness of the Hon. W. C. G. Knowles, who has recently joined the Council, and of the Honourable the Chief Justice whose athletic figure some of us recall striding along the slithery slopes of Lantao on the occasion of our archaeological excursion last year. We hope that this year we may provide a further opportunity for members who do not perhaps know one another as well as it might be desired, to join in a combined social and study expedition either to Lantao or elsewhere in the New Territories. We are particularly fortunate in being able to include the memorable address of Professor Drake on Nestorian Crosses, even though the printed article cannot reproduce the warmth and inspiration of his personal eloquence and exposition. The first Journal of the Society produced last year by the Editorial Board and completed, in the absence of Mr. Cranmer-Byng, by Mr. James Liu, had a very good reception. The Editors are to be congratulated on a worthy production which has set a pattern and standard for the future and which I feel will be more than sustained in this year's issue which, it is hoped, will be ready for delivery in May or June next. The report of the Hon. Treasurer, Mr. T. J. Lindsay, will, in his absence on leave, be presented to you by Mr. A. L. Harman of The Hong Kong Bank, who has been good enough to step into the breach. Some features of the Report deserve serious attention. In the first place, we had at the end of 1961 a narrow margin of $2,265.61 over and above our expenditure and $4,790.94 cash in the Bank. In addition, we had a capital investment of $16,247.25 at cost. This apparently favourable financial position is mainly due to donations of $500 each from three leading concerns in the Colony, Messrs. Butterfield and Swire, Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Co., and The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, together with a magnificent gift of $10,000 from an anonymous donor given in 1960 in memory of Arthur de Carle Sowerby. Despite the exacting calls on their time they have been attending our meetings, and this is a noble example to other busy people in the Colony. We appreciate also the zeal of many other prominent personages including the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Hogan, and the Hon. W. C. Knowles who is a member of the Council and whose business house has provided us with both an Honorary Treasurer, Mr. T. J. Lindsay, and an Honorary Librarian, Mr. John Le Mare. I should like also to refer to the interest in the Society taken by members of H.M. Forces and particularly to the interest taken by Col. Halliday and Col. Mackenzie, both of whom have now left the Colony, but it is greatly hoped that this interest will be sustained by their successors. Secretary, Mr. R. E. Lawry. It is proposed to hold a symposium during weekends to discuss the social organisation of village life and other aspects of life in the New Territories. A programme has been arranged for the weekend May 9th-10th, particulars of which have already been supplied to members. This extension of our activities is in accord with the avowed objects of the Society for it is our aim to direct attention not only to the cultural and literary heritage of the part of Asia in which we live, but also to practical pursuits such as its natural history, fauna and flora, and the lives of the people around us. A particularly noteworthy and important work of the Society is the production of the Journal, the fourth volume of which may be expected this summer. The Journal, built up on the meticulous standard of editorship set up by Mr. Cranmer-Byng and the Editorial Board of which, until his departure earlier this month, he had been Chairman, has already achieved a well-deserved reputation among the productions of learned societies in the same field. The contributions which come from non-members as well as members are sufficiently varied in nature and interest to appeal to the specialists as well as to the general reader. The Society may well be proud of its Journal and grateful to Mr. Cranmer-Byng and his colleagues for their splendid work and achievement. The Financial Statement of 1963, which the Honorary Treasurer will present to you, shows a capital account of £1,699.10.0 and an apparent excess of income over expenditure of HK$2,947.26. The real position in the matter of income, however, is that the annual subscriptions from members during 1963 amounted to $6,177.91, while the expenses amounted to $7,459, leaving a deficit of $1,282. This deficit is met by recourse to income from the small capital investment fund, the greater part of which was established by the generosity of an anonymous donor, when the Branch was revived, for the purpose of establishing a library and for other capital expenditure necessary for the future activities of the Society and not for meeting current expenses. For the small annual subscription of $20, members receive, in addition to the benefit of the meetings during the year, a free copy of the Journal, which is sold to the public for HK$12. A serious aspect of the accounts is that out of a total number of 371 members there are 166 who have not yet paid their subscriptions for 1963. The subscriptions are due on the 1st January each year, but a margin of grace is allowed until June 30th. Some of those who have not paid have probably left the Colony; in the case of others it is probably a matter of forgetfulness or procrastination. As I stressed last year the Hon. Treasurer and the Hon. Secretary are both busy people who have neither the time nor the staff to continue to appeal to and to press members for payment and it would greatly lessen their burden if members made their subscriptions payable by banker's order or became life members. The need for an increased membership has recently been emphasized by our Patron, Sir Robert Black, in a message which was authorised for circulation in support of the Society's appeal. A copy of this message, together with a brochure containing a synopsis of the history of the Hong Kong Branch of the Society, is now available to members who are asked to help by recruiting such of their friends and acquaintances as may be interested in the objects of the Society. This month we are faced with a double loss of very serious import. Sir Robert Black who has been our Patron since the Branch was reconstituted will be leaving the Colony at the end of this month. Sir Robert has not only honoured the Society with his distinguished patronage, but both he and Lady Black have shown keen personal interest in the Society and in spite of the heavy calls on their time have been regular attendants at our meetings. They have helped to foster the growth of the Society during the first vital years of its revival and stimulated the interest of the public in the activities. At the beginning of the month Mr. Cranmer-Byng left the Colony to take up another appointment in Canada. He took a leading part in the re-establishment of the Hong Kong Branch in 1959, served on the Council until his departure and above all, it may truly be said that the Journal is a monument to his scholarship and editorial ability. His place will be exceedingly difficult to fill. TREASURER'S REPORT Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen, My first duty this year is to make apologies to Mr. Knightly and to Mr. Mack. First to Mr. Knightly who audited the accounts last year and who did not receive the acknowledgment of his work and responsibility in the printed copy of the accounts that appeared in the Journal. Secondly, to Mr. Mack on whom was placed the responsibility which was not warranted in that year. Unfortunately, I did not see a proof of this page of the Journal before it went to press. My second duty is to thank Mr. Harman for having audited the accounts this year. I am afraid he had quite a task. The Accounts have been in your hands for some time and there is little I need say about them. As you will see, the excess of income over expenditure in 1963 was $2,947.62. This compares with $1,708.00 in 1962. We have been able to invest a further £300 in Hong Kong Bank shares and their value has appreciated since they were purchased. The only other point that I would mention is that sales of Journals and Journal Articles have brought in a small but significant amount to offset the cost of the Journal. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Members of the Society, to thank our President who most generously paid for the cost of the colour prints in Volume 3 of the Journal. Perhaps some benefactor may help us to realize our hope. This brings me to the question of finance. The Hon. Treasurer has submitted the audited Balance Sheet and a Statement of Accounts for 1964. On the surface it looks very rosy. But it is subject to two very important qualifications: 1. The excess of income over expenditure appears as $8,274.18. Out of this, a sum of $7,000 is already allocated to the cost of printing the 1964 Journal, and some at least of the balance will be required for printing the brochure on the Symposium. So, in effect, there is no surplus of income for 1964. 2. The total expenditure for 1964 amounted to approximately $10,738.35, allowing $7,000 for the cost of the Journal. The total income from annual membership fees amounted to only $6,810.74 which leaves a shortage of $3,927.61. We must therefore face the fact that the annual subscription of $20 is very far from meeting the annual expenses of the Society. The balance is only made up by drawing on the income from our small capital account and such uncertain items as the sale of journals. The annual subscription of $20 is lower than that of any comparable society and when it is realized that it includes a free copy of the Journal, which is sold for $12, members, I hope, will admit that they get more than full value. The Council has therefore regretfully come to the conclusion that the subscription should be raised to $30, except perhaps for students and others under 25, and it is proposed to convene an extraordinary general meeting of the Society before the end of the year, so that, if the new rate of subscription is approved, it can come into effect from 1st January, 1966. In conclusion, I want again to pay tribute and acknowledge my thanks to all my colleagues on the Council and particularly to the hard working Hon. Secretary, Mr. R. E. Lawry, and Hon. Treasurer, Mr. T. J. Lindsay, without whose constant help my work as President could not be done. Finally, I am glad to record that H.E. Sir David Trench has graciously agreed to be our Patron in succession to Sir Robert Black. You will note that there appears to be a very handsome profit of $8,000 last year. This is an illusion as we have to pay for last year's Journal which has not yet come out. I estimate it will cost at least $7,000. Allowing for this, we have covered expenses comfortably but only by drawing on the income from Investments. Lecture receipts is a peculiar item. This represents the money received in respect of the symposium visits to villages, etc. and was all paid out in respect thereof. I would like to thank all Members who have responded to the circular of 12th February I sent out regarding dues. There seems to be some doubt as to when the dues should be paid. The answer, according to Rule 7, is that they should be paid at the beginning of the year. However, the Council feels it is only right, on the one hand, that New Members who paid and joined in November or later should not be asked to pay further dues until fourteen months have elapsed. On the other, membership does not become suspended until the end of June for those who have not paid at the beginning of the year. They become active members again in accordance with Rule 7 if subscription is paid within 2 years of its becoming due. Handling the subscriptions is a fairly arduous job and it is proposed that next year a receipt will not be issued and the membership card for the year in the case of annual members – will be notification that the subscription has been received. This year, however, the Society and the Council will be suffering three serious losses which will make it necessary to give careful consideration to the composition of the Council to enable it to maintain the vitality which it has sustained during the last six years. Early this year Sir Lindsay Ride, who retired last year as Vice Chancellor of the University and had gone to live at Taipo to concentrate on his forthcoming great work on Macao, to the appearance of which we look forward with eagerness, wrote that he felt that the time had come to give up his membership of the Council. Sir Lindsay is a founder member and was a pillar of strength on the Council from the beginning. His address on the Old Protestant Cemetery in Macao, which was published in Volume III of the Journal in 1963, was a memorable one and his address on the same subject last November and his inspired guidance on the occasion of the Society's visit to Macao assured the complete success of the tour. Although Sir Lindsay wrote that he would always follow the activities of the Society from the back benches with unabated interest, his loss to the Council will be severely felt; but we trust that we may still rely on his help and wise counsel which I am sure will be often needed. Next comes Mr. T. J. Lindsay who has performed the increasingly arduous task of Hon. Treasurer from the beginning when he joined the Society as a founder member. Mr. Lindsay has not only looked after our finances and borne the burden of collecting members' subscriptions, but with his immense knowledge of China and the Far East he has been a source of great strength on the Council in all its activities. He is leaving the Colony on retirement to Australia, and we wish him and Mrs. Lindsay long years of happy retirement. As a culmination of our losses, comes the loss of Mr. Lawry. Mr. Lawry will be leaving the Colony this coming summer. From 1961 until recently he was our Hon. Secretary, popular and indefatigable. Upon the resignation of Sir Lindsay Ride as Vice Chairman in January last, the Council by virtue of their powers under the constitution, appointed him Vice President in Sir Lindsay's place until this Annual General Meeting. Secretary he kindly introduced Miss Michaeliones, also of the British Council, who consented to take the position and was duly appointed. Mr. Lawry was not only a veritable god-send as Hon. Secretary but has been the mainstay of the Council and the pivot around which the activities of the Society revolve. Without his aid the Society would have found it very difficult to overcome the obstacles which it experienced in the early years. For the first two and a half years of its existence the rooms of the British Council were the Society's home, for, through the generosity of the British Council and the good offices of Mr. Lawry as its Representative, the rooms were placed at the disposal of the Society for its meetings free of charge, together with all their amenities and staff and the services of a projectionist with the necessary equipment for illustrating the lectures. On behalf of the Society I wish to express our deep appreciation to Mr. Lawry and to the British Council and their staff for all they have done and are continuing to do in support of the Society. Mr. Lawry's work was far beyond that of an Honorary Secretary. He has played a major part in building up the Society to its present flourishing position. He was largely responsible for initiating, inspiring and organising various activities of the Society, particularly our very successful excursions including the Macau tour last December and the symposium on the New Territories, which he organised in conjunction with Dr. Marjorie Topley in 1964 and which was one of the Society's most fruitful achievements. As I worked with Mr. Lawry more closely than anyone else, no one knows better than I how much the Council relied and the Society depended on Mr. Lawry and his ever-willing and devoted work. When the time comes I hope we shall have another opportunity to wish him and Mrs. Lawry god-speed and success in his future career. The Hon. Treasurer's Report shows an excess of income over expenditure amounting to $1,915.96. The fact, however, still remains that last year, as in each of the previous years, the income from annual membership subscriptions fell short of the expenditure, though last year the deficit was only about $400, much less than in previous years. The deficit each year has been met from income from a small capital investment and from sundry small sums such as the proceeds of the sale of journals. In order to place the finances of the Society on a surer basis the ================================================================================ RASHKB Journal 皇家亞洲學會香港分會學刊 | RAS-1966 https://digitalrepository.lib.hku.hk/catalog/bz60k0811 Council last year recommended that the annual subscriptions should be raised from $20 to $30 and a special resolution was unanimously passed at an extraordinary general meeting of the Society on November 22, 1965 to the following effect: That the first sentence of Rule 7 of the Society's Rules be deleted and the following substituted therefor: Ordinary members of the age of twenty-six years and over shall pay an annual subscription of HK$30 and members under the age of twenty-six years shall pay an annual subscription of HK$20 payable in advance on the first of January in each year. ** As the Hon. Treasurer's Report will show, the amount received so far since January 1 this year from the increased subscription is close on $8,000 which shows that about 265 members have paid. About 130, however, or one third of the total membership have not yet done so, but they have a period of grace until June 30. Those members who are in arrears with their payments are earnestly urged to send in their subscriptions as soon as possible and save the time and labour of the Hon. Treasurer in sending more reminders. Some members have paid only $20 instead of $30 either from oversight or from failure to correct their standing instructions to their banks. I am glad to end my report with the mention of a happy incident which happened after our last annual general meeting. A good friend of the Society, one of the original life members Mr. Stanley Smith sent in a cheque for $5,000. He had meant to suggest that the Society "should find a publicity officer, somebody who would chase after a few more members", but he thought "it would make things a bit easier if the Society had a few more dollars in the till. You will see, amongst the receipts, a donation of $5,000; $3,800 of this has been treated as capital, and invested. Included in the figure for Sundry Receipts is a sum of $2,850, which is a grant from The Asia Foundation for the purchase of books for the Society's library. The major item of expense is the cost of the Journal, coming to nearly $15,000. This figure covers two issues. Volume IV cost $9,800; Volume V cost $5,000 in 1965, and another $645 for reprints has been paid this year. Against this, sales have only brought in $950. The high cost of Volume IV was due to colour plates, and I am sorry to say that in the present state of the Society's finances, we cannot afford colour plates. You will (from Note 2) see that we have still a large stock of Volume V available for sale, and as the Journal becomes better known, the chance of a larger income from sales is increased. The Symposium Brochure has been well received. It cost the Society a net figure of $680. The Macao Tour produced a small profit of $225. If we take the cost of the Journal at $6,000 and Sundry Expenses at $2,000 (including lectures), we have a Recurrent Expenditure of not less than $8,000, which we expect to meet from annual subscriptions. So far in 1966, Annual Membership Fees come close to $8,000, which means that some 265 members out of over 400 have so far paid their subscriptions, although in a few cases only $20 has been paid against the new subscription of $30. I would ask these people to let the new Hon. Treasurer have the additional $10 as soon as possible. I would also ask the other 120 or 130 annual members who have not yet paid their subscriptions for this year to do so as soon as possible. I would like to wish the Society success in the future. T. TREASURER'S REPORT FOR 1966 The Accounts for 1966 have been audited by Mr. O. P. Edwards of The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. I assumed office as Hon. Treasurer only a month ago following Mr. W. S. Addis and Mr. Michael Morgan who acted temporarily after Mr. T. J. Lindsay's retirement. On the income side, there is a gratifying increase in Life Membership subscriptions, now $2,750 against $650 last year. The annual subscriptions amounted to $10,177, a little over $2,000 short of our total expenditure. The shortage was covered by income from investments amounting to $2,054.69 (against $1,742.54 last year) and from the sale of copies of the Journal. The total amount of annual subscriptions at the increased rate of $30 a year would have been higher had all members paid their subscriptions by the end of the year, and if all members had given instructions to their banks to increase their annual subscriptions from $20 to $30. Members are strongly urged to pay by means of Banker's Orders in order to ease the arduous work of the Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer. Our investments show an increase in market value of over $4,000 in spite of the depressed market. The amount of $13,000 cash deposit is rather illusory. A sum of $2,500 represents a donation from the Asia Foundation and is earmarked to pay for books which have already been ordered. About $7,000 to $8,000 will be required to pay for the next issue of the Journal and off-prints. Provision has also to be made for the printing of the brochure on the 1966 Symposium and for the reprinting of the paper by Sir Lindsay Ride on "The Old Protestant Cemetery in Macao". We hope to recoup the cost of these publications by their sale, but we shall need more money to reprint Volume 1 of the Journal which has now been sold out and to build up our library and to provide for its accommodation. It is hoped that, in the year 1969 which will be the tenth year after the revival of the Hong Kong Branch of the Society, we may achieve a membership of 500. The Journal of the Society (which has now reached its seventh issue) covering the year 1966 came out in 1967 under the editorship of Mr. Hayes and has maintained its high standard and interest. From the Hon. Treasurer's report it will be seen that on the working of the year there was a small deficit of $738 due mainly to the doubling of our expenditure this year on the Society's publications, the Journal, the Volume on the 1966 Symposium and the reprinting of Sir Lindsay Ride's article on the Old Protestant Cemetery in Macao, from the sale of which we expect to replenish our finances. Our efforts to build up a library available for the use of members have this year shown some promise of success. We have now a collection of over 300 volumes of standard works on China and the Far East including, in particular, works on South China and Hong Kong and a valuable collection of exchange journals. Our collection has been enriched with the books purchased with the generous grant of $2,850 from the Asia Foundation and with about 100 books from the library of the late Colonel Burkhardt and Madame du Breuil generously presented by Colonel Burkhardt's daughter. Our thanks are due once again to Mr. F. A. Nixon who has enabled us to receive from the Fung Ping Shan Museum of the University five albums containing photographs of his collection of Nestorian Crosses which are housed in the Museum. The British Council have come to our aid by kindly providing space in their library for the greater part of our books, while some of the rarer books and reference works will still be kept for the time being in the University Library. The accommodation given to our library by the British Council is the best temporary solution of our library problem until some kind benefactor appears to give us a room of our own with sufficient funds to provide for a part-time librarian. Before the original branch of the Society was wound up in 1859 it had a substantial and valuable library which was presented to the Morrison Educational Society and it was fortunate then in having good friends in its first President — Sir John Davis — and the Chief Justice who provided a ================================================================================ RASHKB Journal 皇家亞洲學會香港分會學刊 | RAS-1968 https://digitalrepository.lib.hku.hk/catalog/66833948d 4 room for the Society and its library in a large room of the Supreme Court. During the year we suffered the loss of our very efficient Hon. Secretary Miss Michaeliones who was transferred to the British Council at Leeds and also of our Hon. Treasurer Mr. Lanchester of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. We have, however, been fortunate in having as Hon. Secretary Mr. T. H. Thomas of the British Council and as Hon. Treasurer Mr. D. A. Gilkes, a Chartered Accountant on the administrative staff of the Chinese University and we are deeply grateful to them for undertaking a task which occupies so much of their time and labour and those of their staff. I cannot conclude without expressing again our deep appreciation of the support and assistance given to the Society by the British Council and its staff. The Society's early meetings were held in its library; the Council of the Society holds all its meetings in its office; it has provided us with three successive Hon. Secretaries who with their staff, and in particular the indispensable Mrs. O'Hara, have been a tower of strength on which we have relied from the days when the Hong Kong Branch was re-established in 1959. 8 April, 1968 J. TREASURER'S REPORT FOR 1967 The Accounts have again been kindly audited by Mr. O. P. Edwards of The Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation. I assumed office as Hon. Treasurer last June following Mr. G. W. Lanchester. The Accounts show a small deficit amounting to $738. This is due almost entirely to the increase in expenditure on publications which amounted to $12,670, almost double the expenditure of the previous year. Most of this increase is due to the printing of the 1966 Symposium and Journal and the reprinting of Sir Lindsay Ride's article "The Old Protestant Cemetery in Macao", referred to in the Hon. Treasurer's Report for 1966. It is hoped to recover the cost of these publications by their sale during the current year, and it is gratifying to note that Journal sales for this year are already in excess of the figure for 1967. Members are reminded that Journal receipts for 1967 are predominantly from sales to those outside the Society, the annual Journal being free to members. Annual Memberships, whilst showing an increase over the previous year are considerably less than the total expenditure, and the Society was only able to meet the heavy expenditure on Journals by the income from investments and the sale of Journals. In spite of reminders there are still about 25 members who have not yet altered their bankers' orders from $20 to $30 and it is earnestly hoped that they will take the necessary action. The investments still show an increase in market value over cost, in spite of the depressed market and the effects of devaluation. The amount of $25,333 cash deposit is illusory. Almost one-half has already been used for meeting the printing charges of the Journals, and shown as a Sundry Creditor in these accounts. A further amount of approximately $1,500 representing the balance of a donation from the Asia Foundation has already been used to pay for books: this grant is now exhausted. It is also hoped to reprint Volume I of the Journal which has now been sold out and to increase the stock of books in the library. Members and their friends are earnestly requested to note that there are several back issues of Journals and other publications for sale as listed in the recent pamphlet in the 1967 Journal. J. LINDSAY* Clipper ships, with their vast spread of canvas, racing home with the season's China teas have earned the admiration of artists and the narrative skill of many authors. But the steamer tea races from Hankow have attracted much less attention. Endurance of the crews aloft in clippers catches the imagination more than the endurance of the stokehold gangs, and the development of reliable and fast ocean-going steamers is not as picturesque a subject as that of the sailing ship. Nevertheless, at the time, the annual steamer tea race from Hankow caused excitement enough in Far Eastern waters. Although steamers also sailed laden with tea from Foochow and from Japan, it was the race from the centre of China, with the first hazardous leg down the Yangtsze to Woosung, that held the public interest. Until 1869, when the Suez Canal was opened, the Clipper ship could hold its own with the steamer service to China via the Cape. But the much shorter route afforded by Suez, which cut across the wind routes and so was suitable only for steamers, meant the end of sailing vessels in the high-value cargo eastern trade. The steamer tea races resulted in a reduction of transit time from Hankow to London from sixty-one days in 1870 to thirty-one days in 1883 (see Table I), although in later years a few more days were added to the passage. The account of the races in the following pages covers the eleven-year period from 1877 to 1887. Every year in the beginning of May came Hankow's short period of excitement and glory. The tea buyers from Shanghai and England, the chuszes,† arrived to pit their wits against the Chinese Mr. Lindsay joined Butterfield and Swire in Shanghai in 1933. He studied Chinese in Peking in 1934, served in Shanghai and Tsingtao, and was interned in Shanghai during the Pacific War. He was transferred to the firm's Hong Kong office in 1949 and was Staff Manager until he retired in 1966. He was a Councillor and Hon. Treasurer of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society until his retirement, and is M.A. † The newspapers use chaszes without characters. Matthews Dictionary gives ch'a shih (*) as the name for tea-tasters. The complete set of the volumes now 8 in number with the 9th in the press is now being regarded as of increasing value. Vol. 1 is long out of print, but we expect to have sufficient demand for a limited new issue to justify reprint as soon as possible. As to our Library we can now say that we have a considerable number of books upwards of 300 volumes but unfortunately no library room of our own to accommodate them. One section including some of the rarer volumes and the growing number of exchange journals is kept in the library of the University of Hong Kong; the remainder are housed in the library of the British Council in the Gloucester Building. The library of the original branch of the Society founded in 1847 was the first library organised in Hong Kong, with the exception of that of the Medico-Chirurgical Society founded in 1845 whose members with their small collection of books—mainly professional joined the new branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1847.* The Society's library of 400 volumes was housed at the old Court House where the Society had been granted by Sir George Bonham a room to hold its meetings: but in 1859 when the Society became defunct the whole of its library was handed on trust to the Morrison Educational Society which later in 1869 presented its own and the R.A.S. library to the City Hall. Now we are back where we started in 1847, with a library of 400 books gradually increasing but with no generous benefactor to give us a room in which we can house them. From the Hon. Treasurer's Report you will see that the Society's finances are in a reasonably healthy condition. There appears to have been an excess of income over expenditure, but that was partly due to a greatly increased income from the sale of journals and the bank interest and dividends received. The annual subscriptions amounted to $11,590 but the expenditure was $17,398. The gap was bridged mainly by interest from investments, bank interest, and the sale of journals. Since the last general Meeting there have been several changes within the Council of the Society. Mr. Robert Bruce left Hong Kong on retirement in March 1968 and his place on the Council was filled by his successor as Representative of the British Council, Mr. G. A. Bridges. Professor K. E. This has largely been brought about by the increase in sale of publications, which this year amounted to $6,118 (against $1,708 last year). Such a high figure for the sale of publications cannot be expected for the future since this year's figures include the sales of 2 Journals (1967 and 1968) and the full effects of the sales of the brochure on the 1966 Symposium and Sir Lindsay Ride's booklet "The Old Protestant Cemetery in Macao". There is therefore no room for complacency, and it will be noticed that once again annual subscriptions do not cover our total expenditure, the shortfall being covered by bank interest, income from investments and the sale of publications. In December 1968 the 125 shares in the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation (London Register) were sold at a profit of $9,981 and are responsible for the large current account balance ($23,736). The proceeds of this sale have since been re-invested in buying 400 Hong Kong Electric and 400 Lane Crawford, the latter now showing a gratifying increase in market value together with a rights issue of 50 shares. There has also been a recent bonus issue of 133 shares in the China Light & Power. The cost over market value of 6% Commonwealth of Australia 1977/80 can be attributed not only to the low market value of this stock but also to the effects of devaluation. The Society is expected to meet heavy expenditure in the forthcoming year. The 1969 Journal with offprints will call for an amount of $8,000 to 9,000, and it is expected that Volume I of the Journal will be reprinted in the near future, calling for another $3,000. Members are strongly urged to assist in increasing the membership of the Society not only to help towards the cost of this high anticipated expenditure but also to obtain a more satisfactory income over expenditure for the future. It was supported by the Municipal Councils of the International Settlement and of the French Concession with liberal grants. In Hong Kong, however, no philanthropist has yet appeared to help the Society and the Government gives us only $200 a year in return for which it receives free copies of the Society's publications. Our library is increasing and now consists of about 500 books but can be much enlarged by the purchase of books and by donations. One section of the library, the rarest volumes and our exchange journals as well as a stock of our own journals, is kept in the University, while the other section is kept in the rooms of the British Council which is already hard pressed to house its own library. We are grateful to the University and the British Council for these facilities and the services of their staff but the time has come when the Society will have to appeal for funds to house our library and make it more easily available. We have to acknowledge with gratitude the gifts of books made during the year, including contributions from the Hong Kong University and from the South China Morning Post. A most valuable gift was the presentation on behalf of the Diocesan Girls' School of the classic and rare book, Bentham's Flora Hongkongensis, published in 1861. Bentham was a member of the Society but published his great work two years after the Society's collapse. In this connection I want to add that it has been my great wish, so far not achieved, to see Bentham's book succeeded by a new and colour edition of the Flora of Hong Kong based on the 500 admirable slides from the photographs taken by Mr. F. A. Nixon. With some Government encouragement and some philanthropic help, such as was given by Jardines and Dents in 1859, such an aim could be achieved and would serve as a permanent contribution by the Royal Asiatic Society to the natural history of Hong Kong. As you will see from the Hon. TREASURER'S REPORT FOR 1969 This year's accounts now before you have been kindly audited by Messrs. Wong, Tan & Co. The Income and Expenditure Account shows a surplus of $5,691 compared with $6,970 in the previous year. However, this seemingly satisfactory position should be treated with reserve. Firstly, as in previous years, the annual membership fees ($10,559) do not cover the total expenditure on Journal expenses, purchase of library books, and sundry expenses, the shortfall being covered by bank interest, income from investments, and the sale of publications. Secondly, there is a drop in the annual membership fees for the first time for many years. Thirdly, the surplus would have been considerably less if the Society had to meet the expenses of re-printing Volume I of the Journal as forecasted last year. The drop in the Sale of Publications from $6,118 to $3,728 was forecasted in my report last year since the 1968 figure reflected the sales of two Journals (1967 and 1968). At the beginning of the year, the Society re-invested the proceeds of sale of the 125 shares in the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (London Register) in 400 Hong Kong Electric and 400 Lane Crawford; these continue to show a gratifying increase in market value, with the former recently issuing a one for one and the latter a rights issue of 50 shares in April 1969. Unless there is an increase in numbers, thereby producing more annual membership fees, the Society is very unlikely to continue to show a surplus in the current year. Besides the cost of re-printing Volume I ($4,000), now expected by the end of June, the Society will need to meet expenditure on printing this year's Journal and off-prints ($9,000), and the proceedings of the week-end symposium "The Changing Face of Hong Kong" ($3,800); in addition, the Society has recently sponsored a lecture and performance of Peking Opera costing $2,400. It is anticipated, therefore, the Society will show a deficit for the current year, and members are urged to encourage their friends to become members in order to increase annual fees and help to offset the deficit. 13 May 1970. (c) on the 12th October, the Council agreed "that should Mr. Hayes succeed in being able to go to the 28th International Conference of Orientalists in Canberra in the early part of January 1971, he would be the Society's Representative." (Arising out of this Mr. Hayes did represent us at Canberra, and on his return gave a talk, 15th February 1971, to the Society on the Conference.) (d) on 14th December, the Council decided that the President should write to the Chairman of the Select Committee of the Urban Council in support of the project that Hong Kong should have a proper museum on a suitable site. This letter was received by the Chairman and his Committee with great pleasure and approval.* Reports by the Hon. Treasurer and the Hon. Librarian, concerning financial and library matters, will be tabled separately later in this meeting. Membership. The total number of members on the books of the Society at the end of 1970 was 501. The number of new members joining during the year was 39 (1 Life Member and 38 Ordinary Members), while our loss in membership was 22 (2 deceased, 20 resigned), making a net gain in membership for the year of 17. The contacts recently made between some of our members either personally or officially and other organizations in the Orient with aims similar to ours, continues. In my report last year I predicted that the Society would make a deficit due to forthcoming printing charges. As you can see from the Income and Expenditure Account this has been the case where a surplus of $5,691 in 1969 has been turned into a deficit of $6,529 in the current year. This is entirely due to the increased expenditure, the heaviest since the Society was revived eleven years ago. This increase can be seen in the expenditure incurred in the very successful Peking Opera, which the Society sponsored, and in the amount spent on printing Journals. The latter falls into three categories, the reprinting of Volume I, the printing of the symposium "The Changing Face of Hong Kong" and the 1970 Journal. The 1970 volume which you are just about to receive if you have not already done so, is a splendid work, but it has cost almost 50% more to print, due to rising costs, the increased size and not least the reproduction of coloured photographs. Members will recall that they receive this free and there is no doubt that it is exceptionally good value for money. However your Council has recently endorsed the proposal that in view of the exceptional expense, the price of this particular Journal to non-members and to members, should they wish for more than one copy, should be raised to $18 from the present $12. On the Income side you will notice that this is more or less the same as in the previous year. Annual Memberships do not cover, and never have covered, the expenditure. It is of course important that the Society should increase its membership, not only to enable it to become wider known, but also to increase its income: this is the one positive way in which all members can contribute, by asking their friends to become members. At present, income from this source is fairly static (in 1968 it was $11,380; in 1969, $10,559; in 1970, $10,853 and in 1971 it looks as if the amount will still be under $11,000). I would therefore urge you to help in increasing our membership so that the Society can afford to produce more publications like the 1970 Journal and sponsor other activities such as the Peking Opera. TREASURER'S REPORT FOR 1971 The Accounts now before you have again been kindly audited by Messrs. Wong, Tan & Co. The deficit of Expenditure over Income for this year amounts to $792, compared with a deficit of $6,529 in the previous year. This is not, unfortunately, due to increased income but rather to decreased expenditure. Journal and other Publication expenses in 1970 ($20,350) were, as members may recall, exceptionally heavy, due to the number of publications about to be printed. The 1971 expenditure under this category ($16,657) is also high due to the following publications due for printing: the 1971 Journal, the report of the 1970 Symposium, and the Journal index. Such expenditure is of course a healthy sign of the Society's activities in this direction. The shortfall in Annual memberships to cover the expenditure is, as in previous years, made up by bank interest and dividends. Annual memberships are the most important part of the Society's income and members are actively encouraged to urge their friends to join the Society, not only to increase the income under this heading, but in order to make the Society wider known and permit more persons to share in its worthwhile activities. The Sundry Creditors on the Balance Sheet are for the publications referred to earlier. Local investments continue to show a gratifying increase in market value, which cannot unfortunately be said for the 6% Commonwealth of Australia Stock. The local branch of the Society was founded originally in March 1843, but unfortunately collapsed with the death of its Hon. Secretary in 1859, and despite all efforts it failed to revive. It was not until 1959, a hundred years later, that a group of people who had become concerned at the shortage of cultural opportunities existing in Hong Kong at that time, decided to bring the Society back to life, to provide a milieu for the study of Hong Kong, China, and adjacent areas. This met with considerable local enthusiasm and support. Many scholars — historians, anthropologists, sociologists and natural scientists, to mention a few examples — have given talks to the Society, presented papers at our symposia (papers often based on original research), and helped to organise field trips. The Hong Kong Branch, in its new form, has now completed its fourteenth year. Both the Hon. Treasurer and Hon. Librarian have submitted separate reports, and the Hon. Treasurer will presently explain the mysteries of the balance sheet to us. I therefore propose to concentrate on our programme, membership, and plans for the future. THE PROGRAMME During the year we have had ten lectures, one followed by an extraordinary general meeting, and two invitations: one to Dr. Dale Craig's music workshop to learn about Chinese music, and one to a lecture held by the newly-formed Ceramics Society on March 18, and delivered by Mr. Soame Jenyns, formerly Deputy Keeper of Oriental Antiquities at the British Museum. We organised four visits to local places of interest, and one overseas, to Laos; and we held one week-end symposium. The symposium was the first event of the year, and was devoted to “The fauna of Hong Kong". It was organised by Professor Brian Lofts, head of the Department of Zoology, University of Hong Kong, who also arranged two associated field trips. Our representative on the Arts Centre Management Committee is Mr. David Gilkes, our Hon. Treasurer, who reports that because of the constantly increasing costs of building in Hong Kong (currently about 35% a year) and because of difficulties in fund-raising (always a problem with cultural projects in the Colony) building is not likely to start until April 1974. The Society is of course keeping an eye on developments. Because of this delay we are not now proposing to raise our subscription rate from $30 to $50 until January 1976 (we had originally intended to raise it in 1975). At present we continue to be extremely grateful to the British Council for the facilities they provide to us, both in the use of an office for Council meetings of the Society, in clerical assistance, and in housing part of our library. We are also grateful to Hong Kong University for the various facilities they provide, including housing more than half our library collection. In early December the Arts Centre held an exhibition at the City Hall at which constituent-member Societies each had a space to demonstrate their own activities or display examples of their work. Mr. Tony Rydings, our Hon. Librarian arranged our own exhibition most effectively and provided show cases. One of the items we showed was our Tibetan scroll obtained from the late Mr. F. A. Nixon, a former member of the Society (you will see from the Hon. Librarian's report that we are also indebted to him for a large donation of books from his estate). We also had samples of our Journal and symposium publications on display. A book was provided for people who wanted further information on the Society, to write their names and addresses. Nearly 100 people expressed interest and all were sent information. MEMBERSHIP Our membership increased this year, probably due to the interest shown in the Society at the Arts Centre exhibitions and to the Laos tour. At this time last year membership stood at 555. It is normal, in this very mobile community, for us to have our gains and losses during the year. During the last annual period we lost eight members through resignation, one through death, and thirty-two did not renew their membership: thus there were forty-one losses in all. The raised subscription for Society membership to $50 was in response to the cost of our membership of the Centre. So far our membership has already brought tangible benefits in the form of increased publicity and joint presentations and it is expected this trend will continue. The Society has also had a representative (your Treasurer) on the Management Committee and he has been in a position to ensure that the Society's interests are taken into account in all decisions about functions and facilities. There have been several constitutional changes in the Hong Kong Arts Centre, details of which need not be elaborated here: suffice to say that the Hong Kong Arts Centre is now established under an Ordinance with a board of management, and that the Committee structure is now more clearly defined. The Hong Kong Arts Centre is now being built and is expected to be completed by early 1977 depending on the financial situation. Your Society hopes to be in a position to rent a small room in the Centre for members to use and to house our library. We are continuing to keep a watch on developments. THE PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEY One of our newest ventures has been the photographic survey of old buildings and scenes representing the traditional cultural life of the Colony. A comprehensive report has been tabled at this meeting. Your Council, particularly your Hon. Secretary, Mr. Ian Diamond who provided the impetus for this project, initiated the survey to provide as coherent a pictorial record as possible of the main visual features of urban and rural Hong Kong. It is hoped it will be of value to research workers. The survey has been undertaken in close cooperation with members of the Photographic section of the South China Athletic Association which has not only given generous financial assistance but supplied many volunteers from among its members to undertake the photographic work involved. I would like to take the opportunity of expressing our thanks to them now. A small exhibition consisting of a selection from among the photographs taken during the year has been prepared for this meeting. TREASURER'S REPORT The Accounts before you have again been audited by Messrs. Wong Tan & Co. and I am very grateful for this service which they continue to render to the Society. One of the chief jobs of a Treasurer of a Society such as this is to ensure that there is enough income coming in to meet the expenditure. For the year under review this target has been achieved: there was a surplus of income over expenditure amounting to $7,640; there was a significant increase in annual membership fees from $10,954 to $14,230, reflecting the larger membership. On the other hand, there was a decline in the sale of publications from $4,126 to $1,400 due to the delays in producing the 1973 journal: I am pleased to report that for this year sales of journals to-date are already $2,500. Bank interest received is considerably up, due to the higher rates of interest prevailing in 1974. On the expenditure side you will notice that the total expenditure for this year is about the same as last year (i.e. $30,581 as opposed to $30,485). However, this is predominantly due to the fact that in the year 1974 the Society did not incur any extraordinary expenditure as in the previous year when the Society paid its entrance fee to the Hong Kong Arts Centre. This was substituted by higher expenditure on journals and sundries: the latter is due to increased stationery prices, advertising and the fact that more activities has generated more such expenditure. Another chief job of the Treasurer is to preserve the assets of the Society. Like all those who have had to make investment decisions over this last year this has been full of hazards: so it may be interesting for you to notice what has happened where virtually no change took place as in this, although this was not due to lack of attention. I should, perhaps point out the market value of the investments of the Society are now at today's date at approximately the same value as cost. Also although the market value at 31st December, 1974 shows a depreciation on cost of approximately $18,246, this should be looked at in the light of the surplus on the realization of investments of $38,763 in the previous year. Looking to the future I am grateful to those who have responded to the call to pay an additional $20 by way of increased subscription, agreed upon 2 years ago. Several of you have decided to become Life Members. Looking further ahead, however, there is no doubt that expenditure will increase because the Society has now undertaken to pay for secretarial assistance, and also there will be certain financial obligations towards the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Looking further ahead the Society hopes to rent premises in the Hong Kong Arts Centre but this will depend on the financial conditions. This, to my mind, will benefit the Society enormously and one cannot rule out the possibility of further subscription increases or alternatively an appeal to all current annual and life members for the initial capital outlay. 24th March, 1975 D. Publications The 1974 Journal is now in process of distribution and many of you who were members also in that year, will have received your copies already. During the year our fifth symposium: Hong Kong: the Interaction of Traditions and Life in the Towns was published and I understand is selling quite well. Also published this year are the proceedings from the immediately preceding symposium organised by Professor L. B. Thrower on: The Vegetation of Hong Kong: its Structure and Change. The publication of Professor Loft's symposium on Fauna is I understand expected very shortly - it has all been proof read and returned to the printer. Part of the 1975 Journal has already gone to the printer and I understand that it should be ready for distribution at the end of the year. Arts Centre As a Constituent Society Member of the Hong Kong Arts Centre, your Society continues to be very ably represented on the Arts Centre Committee by Mr. David Gilkes, our Hon. Treasurer (who will also soon be explaining the Balance Sheet to you). The Arts Centre is due for completion in February 1977 and it should become a focal point for the Arts in Hong Kong. Your Society expects to play an increasing role in the Centre and already tangible benefits have been received through our Constituent Society Membership. Would you note, by the way, that if you are yourself an independent member of the Arts Centre you can save the Society money by informing the Centre of your R.A.S. membership. If you send your Centre membership card together with the Royal Asiatic Society membership card to the Centre for confirmation, we can claim $10 for each such member off the bill we must pay annually to the Centre for our Membership as a Society. You will appreciate the fact that since our payment is calculated on the basis of our membership figure the more members we have the more we have to pay. TREASURER'S REPORT The Accounts before you have again been kindly audited by Messrs. Wong Tan & Co. Financially the Society has had an expensive year—expenditure has risen from $30,621 to $56,024, and in view of this a word of explanation is called for. Firstly, Journal and other publication expenses have risen from $9,709 to $30,464 and reflect rising prices and the number of publications to which the Society committed itself, i.e. the 1975 Journal and 2 Symposium Journals, whereas the previous year there was only one annual Journal. Secondly, the effects of paid secretarial assistance which started in February 1975 is beginning to be felt; and thirdly, the Society's obligation to the Hong Kong Arts Centre as a Constituent Society is shown by way of its annual subscription ($10 per local member). The Society has been able to sustain some of this increased expenditure by, firstly, the effects of the rise in the rate of annual subscription ($30 to $50 as from 1st January, 1975) and secondly, by the very large increase in life memberships. Members will recall that when the annual subscriptions were raised it was decided not to raise the life membership fee until members had had the opportunity to transfer to life membership at the old rate. Several of you took this opportunity, which was wise of you since the life membership fee is now $500. The total amount received from this source of $11,088 therefore is an extraordinary amount and is unlikely to be repeated. The overall result of the Income and Expenditure account is a deficit of expenditure over income amounting to $6,845. I am hopeful that this will be recovered in the current year by a decrease in expenditure on Journals and other publications, and the full effect of the increase in annual membership. The Balance Sheet shows that the Society is still in a reasonably healthy financial position. The figure of $40,000 under Sundry Creditors represents the amounts due for publications earlier and also the 1974 Journal. The number of prints in the files approaches 1,000 and an index is in preparation. The Library Mr. Rydings has tabled a separate report on the library to which he continues to give his unstinted attention, but I would like to acknowledge here our gratitude to those who have donated books to our collection, and to say that we are always interested in any books relevant to our area and subjects as a Society. During the year—just before Christmas—the library was moved to the Arts Centre and is located in the Members' club room. We hope this move will encourage greater use to be made of our books. The very rare, or otherwise valuable, books are being held for us by Mr. Rydings at the University. The Arts Centre Last Annual General Meeting we raised the question of whether or not we should stay in the Arts Centre and you will recall that we had a split vote. As a consequence, we have continued with our association. We hope to have a permanent space on the notice board in the downstairs lobby for our own notices, and we are at present negotiating on the possibility of limited office space. Mr. David Gilkes, our Treasurer and representative on the Arts Centre Committee, attended the opening of the Arts Centre by invitation, and I also attended in another capacity. May I remind you again that if you are members of the Arts Centre and send in your membership card for the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, we are able to obtain a rebate of $10 a member. This would help us in some degree with our annual payments as a constituent Society member of the Centre. Membership Our records show a slight increase in membership over the last financial period. In March 1978 total membership stood at 517. This breaks down to: Hon. members 6, local life members 121; local ordinary members 296; overseas life members 57 and overseas ordinary members 37. During the year there were 25 resignations, mainly of people leaving Hong Kong. TREASURER'S REPORT FOR 1977 The Accounts before you have again been kindly audited by Messrs. Wong Tan & Co., and show that the Society is in a reasonably healthy financial position. The Income and Expenditure account shows that the Society incurred a small deficit in the year amounting to HK$2,808, compared to a similar one of HK$2,962 in the previous year. Members will note that just under half of the society's income comes from Annual Memberships, the rest being made up from life memberships, sale of publications, Bank interest and dividends received. I would like to ask members to encourage their friends to join the Society to improve the annual membership income. This will become increasingly important in the years ahead due to the renting of space in the Hong Kong Arts Centre for the Library and the Secretarial Office, which together will cost HK$5,500 p.a. It is hoped that an increase in annual membership will come about as a result of the Society's activities becoming more well known through the Arts Centre, but members are also asked to assist in this direction. Increased Annual Membership income will also encourage the Society to publish more symposiums to add to its now very respectable collection. The Balance Sheet indicates that the Quoted Investments are continuing to hold up well and show a market value appreciation over cost. These investments are kept under review. Under “Sundry Creditors” an amount of HK$25,000 is shown. This is for two journals, 1976 and 1977, the former of which was received by members at the end of last year and recently paid for: the 1977 journal is likely to be paid for later this year after publication. Treasurer that expenditure on the Library, itemised as "Purchase of Books", shows a substantial increase over the previous year. Part of the amount shown in fact represents the cost of binding the many volumes of periodicals which we receive in exchange for our own Journal. These form a valuable part of our library, and will be a lasting asset in years to come. The number of volumes purchased totalled 27, compared with 35 in the previous year, but donations increased from eight to 18 volumes, of which 13 were from the British Council. Other donors included Dr. J. W. Hayes, and Miss P. Young, and to all of these our thanks are due. TREASURER'S REPORT The Accounts before you have again been kindly audited by Kwan Wong Tan & Fong. On the Income and Expenditure account it will be noted that although expenditure was down from the previous year ($75,510 to $67,239) the Society still incurred a deficit of $8,997 which, with the deficit incurred in the previous year of $10,722, makes a total deficit over the two-year period of $19,719. This is due to the greatly increased costs for the Journals and other publications which are an important aspect of the Society's activities. The increase in expenditure has been partly absorbed by increased income, but this has not been sufficient to offset the increased expenditure. Members will note that income from annual memberships only account for approximately one-third of the total income; the rest being made up of income from sales of publications, bank interest and dividends. This proportion needs to be raised if the financial future of the Society is to continue to be on a sound footing. It has therefore been decided to double annual subscriptions with effect from 1st January, 1983 and life membership subscriptions being doubled with immediate effect. The Balance Sheet shows that the Society is in a sound financial position with adequate cash resources to meet liabilities for the printing of the Journals. JAMES HAYES, AT THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, 17TH FEBRUARY 1983 Dr. Topley, ladies and gentlemen, According to p. 4 of Vol. 1 (1961) of the Journal of the Hong Kong Branch, Royal Asiatic Society: "THE HONG KONG BRANCH was resuscitated as the outcome of a meeting attended by some thirty interested persons, held at the British Council Centre on December 28, 1959. The meeting adopted a constitution approved by the parent Society in London, and formed an interim Council to hold office until a General Meeting should be held. The following were elected to the Council:- President: Dr. J. R. Jones; Vice-Presidents: the Hon. Sir Tsun-nin Chau and Dr. L. T. Ride; Hon. Secretary: Mr. J. D. Duncanson; Hon. Treasurer: Mr. T. J. Lindsay; Hon. Editor of the Journal: Mr. J. L. Cranmer-Byng; other Councillors: Dr. Marjorie Topley and Messrs. James Liu, Holmes Welch, and G. B. Endacott. The Inaugural Meeting of the revived Branch was held on April 7, 1960, in the Loke Yew Hall of Hong Kong University. It was to have been presided over by H. E. the Governor, Sir Robert Black, K.C.M.G., O.B.E., had illness not prevented it. The Inaugural Address was delivered by Professor F. S. Drake, Professor of Chinese at Hong Kong University, on "The Study of Asia: a Heritage and a Task". On January 23, 1961, Sir Robert Black presided over a meeting of the Branch in his capacity as Patron, and thus restored a tradition after a lapse of a hundred years.' ** As incoming President, it is my honour on this occasion, twenty-three years later, to make a presentation to Dr. Topley on your behalf, in recognition of her work as President of the Society from 1972 onwards. TREASURER'S REPORT The Accounts here presented have again been kindly audited by Messrs. Kwan Wong Tan & Fong. It will be noted from the Income and Expenditure Account that a small deficit was incurred for the year (HK$2,987). The Society has made deficits over the last three years due to rising costs; part of this has been absorbed by extra income from Bank Interest and dividends received. Members will recall, however, that from 1st January, 1983, approval has been given by members to raise ordinary annual subscriptions from $50 to $100 p.a. with corresponding increases for other categories of membership. It is anticipated therefore that in future membership subscriptions will contribute more to the expenditure of the Society than in the past and that the deficit trend will be reversed. The Balance Sheet of the Society continues to show a reasonably healthy position with assets considerably in excess of the liabilities. The market value of the shares shows a depreciation over cost but since the preparation of this Balance Sheet an improvement in this position has occurred, and opportunities will be taken as and when they arise to continue this improvement. Membership Last year at this time I reported 25 new members. This year, 82 people have joined the Society. However, this increase is not reflected so fully in the membership numbers owing to weeding-out persons whose subscriptions have been long-outstanding. As of 19 March, 1987 the Society has 433 local members and 135 overseas members, a total of 568. This compares with 530 last year at this time and 475 the year before. There are 94 local life members and 71 overseas life members. From addresses given, and as the result of computerization of our records undertaken by Sharon Bruce, we find that 343 members live in Hong Kong, 57 in Kowloon and 33 in the New Territories. All indications are that our membership will continue to rise. Annual Subscription An increase in annual subscriptions under different heads is intended, but I shall leave our experienced Hon. Treasurer, Mr. David Gilkes, to explain the reasons for the increase and the reasoning behind the suggested amounts now proposed. This will be the subject of a separate discussion and vote. I hope that members will be able to support the Council's proposals. Publications The annual Journal is our major permanent contribution to knowledge of the Hong Kong Region and further afield. Its production is dependent upon the time and energy, largely related to one another, of our editors. In fact, we are fortunate to have two, Dr. Patrick Hase and Dr. David Faure, who are bringing out the 1984 and 1985 Journals respectively. These will appear shortly. Two other publications are also in hand, under other editors. This response gave the Council a better idea of our present situation and how we should move forward. Mr. Ian Deane, one of our members, did the major share of the preparatory work and wrote the draft report, greatly facilitating the Council's consideration of its contents. He is unable to be present this evening as an invited guest, but I wish to state our sincere appreciation of his work on our behalf, before and since the symposium. Following the symposium, the Council decided to strengthen our organisation by establishing a number of committees to cover the main activities and areas of concern. These will be chaired by Councillors. Membership will come partly from the Council and partly from our members, enabling more of you to share in the Society's work. In addition, the Assistant Secretary's work, which has steadily expanded, will be recognised by increasing her salary. A separate paper provides more detail and I will be happy to answer questions. Membership Last year at this time I reported that 82 people had joined the Society. During the year under review this number has further increased by the unheard of number of 192 with, Mrs. Bruce tells me, another 26 applications in hand. As President, may I extend them all a hearty welcome on your behalf. As of 1 March 1988 the Society has 580 local members and 131 overseas members, a total of 711. All indications are that membership will continue to grow, making it likely, before very long, that our membership will exceed that of the North China Branch of the RAS in Shanghai which, at its peak, had around 800 members. Finance Our Hon. Treasurer, Mr. David Gilkes, has tabled his report and will answer questions. I have to report that, after being our Treasurer for no less than twenty-one years, since 1967 in fact, Mr. Gilkes will be handing over to Mr. Robert Nield who has kindly agreed to become Hon. [His appointment has now been confirmed] I have advised Members of these facts, because I did not mention the Society's new link with the Antiquities Advisory Board in my last annual Report, as I ought. Finance The Hon. Treasurer has given an account of our present position, and expectations for the coming year. It is clear from our financial position over the past few years that, even with increased subscriptions, we can barely make ends meet. The rising cost of services and publication make this inevitable. We have already used part of our reserves to meet deficits last year. We should now be looking for ways to replace what has been spent in this way, and also to add to our funds, in order to further the aims and objects of the Society in Hong Kong. Some of you may recall that we celebrated our 25th anniversary by a joint publication with Oxford University Press. We would like to publish more in this way, but need funds to do so. We also considered an annual prize Essay in English on a Hong Kong subject, and would like to take this idea further. It could be at two or three levels, in schools and tertiary institutions, and should be made a valuable prize in order to attract enough competition. With these and other needs for more funds in mind, Phillip Bruce of the Council has suggested a new type of institutional membership, in addition to the scholarly institutional one that has existed since the re-establishment of the Branch. The Council has supported this idea, which is being put to the AGM for consideration tonight. There is no doubt that we could put extra funds to good use, and members are asked to consider the suggestion carefully and support it if they can. In this connection, I have just discovered from the latest Journal of our parent Society that it now has a number of “Corporate Subscribers", as they are styled, "whose generosity sustains its work, including the publication of the Journal". Inevitably, there have been losses too, but with more coming in than going out. May I extend a warm welcome to all new Members. Local Ordinary and Life Members total 718, with 571 addresses; indicating that we have a fair number of husband and wife joint memberships. 99 Members have Chinese surnames, the best we can do in estimating this segment, which comprises over 13% of the total. (The Council, on the other hand, has 5 Chinese members out of 14). As for domicile, 448 Members (79%) live on Hong Kong Island, 75 (13%) "belong Kowloon-side" and 48 (8%) have New Territories' addresses. Overseas Members total around 80. The number is less than last year's, since one result of circulating the letter to the British Foreign Secretary to overseas as well as local Members was to learn, with regret, that there had been some unreported deaths. Administration The tried and tested team of our three ladies, Eveline Caldwell, Anita Wilson and Sharon Bruce, continued to provide the administrative back-up which keeps us moving forward, with occasional input from Phillip Bruce who is unable to avoid some "overflow" from his wife Sharon's duties. Or perhaps he just gets "drafted"! Our Hon. Treasurer, Robert Nield, gives help and advice from the side, always ready and willing when needed. I am most grateful to them all, and wish to record their conscientious, willing and friendly cooperation and assistance at all times. No President can do without them! This is also the place to thank Dr. Anthony Siu who has translated the new RAS Brochure issued after the last AGM. Anthony was also responsible for the printing arrangements. Finance The Treasurer, Mr. Robert Nield, will give a detailed report shortly. You will notice that the finances are in reasonable shape, but the overall situation does need to be watched. The new annual subscription from 1st January 1991 is $250, as agreed at the last annual general meeting and it is hoped to keep this rate for another year. The Library As you will see from the report of Mr. Y.C. Wan, our Hon. Librarian, our Library collection has continued to increase through donations and purchases, mainly through the efforts of Dr. James Hayes. The Library, as many know, is kept at the Kowloon Central Library, as part of the reference collection there. Recently I had a meeting with the Chief Librarian, Urban Council Libraries, Mrs. Barbara Luk, and I am pleased to report that subject to unforeseen circumstances it is anticipated that sometime in 1992-1993 it will be possible to move it to the City Hall Central Library into a special collection room, part of which will be specifically set aside for the Royal Asiatic Society. This is indeed good news and I hope that by this time next year I will be able to report further progress. The Library is becoming a fine reference source of books on China and I do strongly urge you to make use of it: clearly a move to the City Hall area will make it that much easier for members to gain access. They informed us that the books from the North China Branch Library were presently packed up awaiting transfer from the Shanghai Municipal Library, with display in the new premises set for late 1997. (The surprisingly high figure of 20,000 volumes was quoted). We were assured that the books were being well looked after and would be kept together as a library. Viewers would normally need a library card but special arrangements for HK RAS members could be arranged. (For the success of this visit we owe a lot to the advance work of members Jeremy and Jacqueline Hodkinson). Finally on the Monday afternoon we visited the Shanghai History Museum at 1286 Hong Qiao Road where Director Pan Junxiang was the host. It was clear that the Museum was modelled on the lines of the Hong Kong Museum of History. That evening the party flew back to Hong Kong, most impressed by Shanghai's cultural renaissance and very grateful for the warmth of welcome given us by our hosts in Shanghai. For my part, I was equally grateful to the members of the RAS HK Activities Committee for helping the Branch exceed our original aims and expectations for the visit. Penny Robbins and Meredith Tong-Draper are longstanding members of HKBRAS who have taken a very active role in recent activities, both locally and on the mainland. Geoffrey Roper, B.A., is a retired Assistant Commissioner of the (Royal) Hong Kong Police Force and a former long serving council member of HKBRAS. Ronald Bishop Smith, lives in Portugal and is a private researcher into 16th century Portuguese history, notably the exploits of the Portuguese into the Middle and Far East, and China. He has written prolifically on this subject and is one of the very few people familiar with 16th century Portuguese paleography. Keith Stevens, B.A., served with the British Army and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office before his retirement in 1991. He is an authority on Chinese temples and deities, and Chinese history generally, and has written prolifically on these subjects. Dan Waters, M.Phil., Ph.D., is a retired Assistant Director of Education of the Hong Kong Government. He is a long-time council member of HKBRAS and has been President since 1997. He has written prolifically on the history and culture of the HKSAR. Jennifer Welch, M.A., now lives with her husband in Hong Kong having spent a number of years in Singapore, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Australia. Robert Horsnell, is a former civil servant and a Volunteer (of research into and cataloguing of old Hong Kong buildings and monuments) of HKBRAS (argyho@netvigator.com) Lawrence Lai, Daniel Ho and Leung Hing Fung, are, respectively, Reader, Associate Professor and Department Head of the Department of Real Estate and Construction, University of Hong Kong (wclai@hkusua.hku.hk). Eve Lam, has been working in journalism in various capacities for the last nine years. Her current position is news sub-editor/anchor for TVB Pearl in Hong Kong. She holds a master's degree in Journalism from the University of Hong Kong and a bachelor's in Physical and Health Education from the University of Toronto. David Mahoney, is an active member of the Friends of HKBRAS in Great Britain. Martin Merz B.A.(Hons.), studied Chinese at Melbourne University. He continued studies in Taiwan, including a stint at the National Taiwan University Graduate School of History. He worked as a translator and interpreter in Taiwan for several years, acquiring a taste for Oolong tea along the way. He moved to Hong Kong in 1987 to set up a trading company. Robert Nield, is the Hon Treasurer and a Vice-President of HKBRAS (hiflyer@netvigator.com). Anne Ozorio, is an active member of the friends of HKBRAS in Great Britain. Lauren Pfister, is an Associate Professor in the Religion and Philosophy Department as well as jointly appointed to teaching in the Humanities course at Hong Kong Baptist University. He has lived in Hong Kong with his family since 1987. Serving as Associate Editor for the Journal of Chinese Philosophy since 1997, he has continued to pursue research in 19th and 20th century Ruist philosophy, the history of sinology, as well as comparative philosophical and comparative religious studies. He serves also as an Associate Research Fellow of the Centre for Sino-Christian Research at Hong Kong Baptist University (feileren@net1.hkbu.edu.hk). Other active members are Mr Paul Bolding (Secretary), Mr Roger Chandler (Treasurer), Mrs Kirsty Norman, Mr Keith Stevens and Mr David Mahoney. The last of these will be retiring this year and we would like to thank him for his past support and particularly for last year's Annual General Meeting Lecture. The Friends normally meet once a quarter in London on a Saturday at the School of Oriental Studies. There is a Chinese lunch gathering followed by a lecture [Hon. Ed. - Suggest you consider doing it the other way around!]. Once a year there could be a week-end away. In the last year Friends started its programme (April 2002) with a very successful week to Cornwall, when around 25 members visited the well known Gardens (Caerhayes, Trewithen, Pine Lodge, Heligan and the Eden Project) with particular reference to the Asian connection; a very sincere thanks to Mrs Penny Byrne who co-ordinated this. The programme continued with a very well informed lecture by Mr David Mahoney on Awards to Britons in China. David has been collecting medals for some 50 years, some of which he brought to the meeting; the lecture was illustrated with slides which showed the extent of the awards systems to Britons who served in China in the 19th and 20th centuries. In September 2002 the Friends were fortunate to benefit from a visit to the United Kingdom by Dr Elizabeth Sinn, who gave a talk entitled The Ultimate Return: Transhipment of Chinese Migrants' Bones to the Native Village and Hong Kong's Role in the Chinese Diaspora. This was a fascinating insight into the methods and motives as to why the Chinese living in America transported bones of relatives and friends back to China in the 19th Century. More recently, (February 2003) the Friends held their Annual Chinese New Year lunch at the Joy King Lau Chinese Restaurant in Leicester Street, London. Around 50 members attended to welcome in the Year of the Ram, of whom six were new members. For the future the Friends are looking forward to the Annual General Meeting (17th May 2003), when Dr Frances Wood, Curator of Chinese Collections at the British Library will be the speaker on Marco xxxiv ================================================================================ RASHKB Journal 皇家亞洲學會香港分會學刊 | RAS-2002 https://digitalrepository.lib.hku.hk/catalog/mp4901278 # RESOLUTION # HONG KONG BRANCH # OF THE ROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY # MARCH 21ST 2003 At the Annual General Meeting of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, held at the Hong Kong Club, on 21 March 2003, the following Resolution was adopted: Resolved: That the Society should, at the earliest opportunity, formally establish a Scholarship Fund, as a legal entity separate from the general funds of the Society, to allow the Society to make grants and disburse money for the purpose of sponsoring research in the field of Hong Kong studies, and of assisting publication of books in this field, subject to the Rules for the control and disbursement of such a Fund being agreed by Members, those Rules to include provision for the establishment of a Management Board to oversee the Fund, and for the Annual General Meeting of the Society to see and agree the audited accounts of the Fund year by year. That the Hon. Treasurer of the Society be appointed Hon. Treasurer of the Scholarship Fund as well as Hon. Treasurer of the Society. That the Society should, for the future, keep a cash reserve approximately equal to one year's routine expenditure, as assessed by the Hon. Treasurer of the Society.
