'Imperialism' is used to describe the system whereby one nation acquires political and economic control over another less technologically developed nation. "Colonialism" is more difficult to define. Originally the term applied to a settlement of the subjects of a country in lands beyond its boundaries who remain subject to or connected with the parent state.
