        "content_text": "212\n\nCAROLE MORGAN\n\nThe first set of stars is composed of nine xing, orbiting in a framework called the jiugong which has given its name to the set. In point of fact, the jiugong, or Nine Palaces, uses exactly the same pattern as the houtian (see above) but adds the centre as the ninth direction. The name of each star in the series combines the name of a colour with that of a number3:\n\n一白 Yibai 二黑 Erhei 三碧 Sanbi 四綠 Selu\n\n五黃 Wuhuang 六白 Liubai 七赤 Qichi 八白 Babai 九紫 Jiuzi\n\nOf these nine stars five are considered baleful and no burial may take place in the compass point they occupy. Fortunately, no star lingers in the same point for more than a year so that no point of the compass is ever permanently eliminated. (See B. Frank, \"Kata-imi et kata-tagae, Etudes sur les interdits de directions,\" Bulletin de la Maison Franco-japonaise, Tome V, pp. 177 sq.)\n\nThe other set of stars comprises the seven stars of the Dipper and two imaginary xing. The names of these stars stem mainly from the Taoist canon, and present day geomancers use them to describe the shape of mountains and hills as follows:\n\n贪狼 Tanlang 巨門 Juman 禄存 Lucun 文曲 Wenqu 廉真 Lianzhen 武曲 Wugu 破军 Pojun 左辅 Zuofu 右弼 Youbi\n\n(For additional information on these stars see E.H. Schafer, Pacing the Void pp. 50 sq.)\n\nTwo more astronomical terms which occur in fengshui deserve to be mentioned. Both refer to the twenty-eight su (constellations or stellar mansions):\n\n*These combinations are based on the numbers and colours of the Loshu, the second pattern which Heaven gave to Yu and from which Duke Wen deduced the houtian.",

        "content_text": "# THE LIBRARY OF THE HONG KONG BRANCH ROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY\n\n# REPORT FOR THE YEAR 1983-1984\n\nSince the retirement of H. A. Rydings, Esq., last year, and his resignation from the Council, there has been a quiet period of gradual takeover. This has been followed by a wild flurry of activity caused by the donation to the Society of a large number of books from the collection of the late W. V. Pennell, Esq. These came to us via the University of Hong Kong Library and will boost the size of our collection considerably. My intention is to produce an additions list this year. This will provide members with details of the new books. Approximately 280 titles have been added since the last edition of the catalogue which must be a record for the Society. This total also includes gifts from Dr. James Hayes and from the International Cultural Society of Korea. There is only one pessimistic note. This is the recurrent problem of accommodation which has inevitably raised its head with such an influx of material. It may be necessary in the end to re-locate the journal collection but preferable alternatives are being sought. On the subject of journals, the purchase of Volumes 1-18 of Monumenta Serica this year establishes almost a complete run of this title. We have also a new exchange journal to add, The Journal of East Asian Affairs which comes from Korea.\n\nIn all it has been a most productive year.\n\n14th March 1984.\n\nxvii\n\nV. E. MORGAN\n\nHon.         "content_text": "HONG KONG BRANCH\n\nROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY LIBRARY\n\nREPORT FOR THE YEAR 1984-85\n\nA small number of new books and periodicals have been added to the collection this year. An additions list is available from the Hon. Librarian on request.\n\nNews of major importance is the impending relocation of the collection. The premises in the H.K. Arts Centre, which we have been sharing with the Lady Kotewall Library, are full to overflowing. Furthermore, the Society's affiliated membership of the Arts Centre has recently lapsed due to a change in their policy. For this reason alone, we would have been unable to continue renting the accommodation. Therefore, the Council has agreed with the Urban Council to move the collection to the new Kowloon Central Library which is due to open in September 1985. Stocktaking and packing of the books is taking place while I write this report and so there will be a short period during which access to the collection will be difficult. The books and periodicals will be housed in the stacks rather than on the open shelves but a catalogue will of course be readily available. I hope that the move will in fact increase the use of the collection which has been badly under-utilised in the past.\n\nFinally I shall be handing over to Mr. Peter Yeung this year. Mr. Yeung is in charge of the University of Hong Kong's Special Collections, which includes the Hong Kong Collection and he may already be familiar to some members.\n\nMarch 1985\n\nV.E. MORGAN Hon.
