Our coffee, too, is getting weak, for in order to conserve our supply we are using the grounds again and again. Bamboo Wireless has it that Bishop Paschang is in touch with Maryknoll, and that Bishop Ford is receiving funds from Maryknoll.\n\n3-Sunday. Services are as usual, with Father Norris as preacher. Coffee and a bun this morning from our own kitchen. However, Father Meyer now promises us bread three times a day, that is, at least a bun, out of his five-ounce allotment.\n\n4--Our present A-1 Block representative, Mr. Malone, seems to be in disfavor in the minds of many of that block, and finally today at a meeting in the garage, grievances were aired and as a result we have a new representative in the person of Mr. Steiner, a Protestant minister, formerly in charge of the Foreign Auxiliary in Hong Kong. He promises to be efficient, as he is a very conscientious man. Rain interfered with the outdoor May Devotions and they were held in the tiny Maryknoll Sisters' Chapel with the congregation overflowing into the tiny corridors. The Sisters have typed copies of the more popular hymns, and the people join in the singing.\n\n5- Chess tournament begins with Fathers Vincent Walsh and Norris, from our ranks, participating. Father Bauer not so well these days. Tonight we again have “seconds\" on food. Some of us sent 10-word telegrams today, as allowed by authorities. We wonder if they and our previous post cards will ever reach their destination.\n\n6-Father Toomey resigns as Treasurer of the American communal council.\n\nFather Hessler called to \"The Hill\" in regard to his letter requesting release from the Camp as a third national, Bishop Valtorta vouching for him. No decision reached, however. Corregidor falls and with it many of our hopes! As we gaze out to sea and see Japanese ships enter and leave the harbor, we feel very isolated and farther and farther than ever from America. However, there is a little cheer in the air today as we are informed that all Americans are to be repatriated within a month on a ship from Tokyo to Lourenço Marques, Portuguese East Africa. Some may be permitted to go to Shanghai if they choose. Father Bauer improved.",

        "content_text": "203\n\nREFLEXIVITY IN RESEARCH\n\nAND A QUESTION OF CULTURE\n\nMARY PANG\n\n[This paper is a personal account of an exploration into cultural identity and self-awareness resulting from the process of doing research. For her doctoral degree Dr. Pang examined the occupational choices of young Chinese adults in Britain. What was distinctive about this was the fact that while most studies of the Chinese community in Britain have been conducted by non-Chinese researchers, Dr. Pang shared many common characteristics with the subjects of her investigation, including ethnicity, background and age. This presentation focuses on the issues of how the researcher's \"insider knowledge\" influenced the research; and conversely, how the research in turn impacted on the researcher's self-perception and views about her environment.]\n\nThis paper examines my experiences of doing research for a PhD. My doctoral thesis entitled 'Catering to employment needs: the occupations of young Chinese adults in Britain' (Pang, 1993) was an investigation into the occupational choices of young Chinese adults in Britain. The purpose of the research was to locate the position of 16 to 30 year old Chinese in the British labour market, and to determine why these Chinese youth took up the jobs that they did.\n\nFrederick Steier suggested that 'we understand and become aware of our own research activities as telling a story about ourselves' (1991:3) This statement seemed particularly apt in my case, for a complex two-way exchange process occurred in this research whereby I used my \"insider\" knowledge to form decisions regarding the research design; while the research in turn impacted upon my own self-perception and views about my environment.\n\nThere are two main themes which will be discussed in this paper:\n\nOne is the methodological considerations which looks at how my close identification with the subject influenced the nature of the project, and\n\nThe second deals with the process of self-discovery and exploration of my own identity during this period of study,",

        "content_text": "204\n\nThe concept of \"reflexivity\" has been described by Mead (1962) as a turning-back of one's experience upon oneself (Steier, 1991:2). There are many varieties of reflexivity, but the type I will focus on here is \"reflection\". More specially it is \"benign introspection\", which basically requires that we think about what we are doing in our research (Woolgar, 1988: 22).\n\nIn my case this was particularly important given that I shared many common characteristics with the subjects of my study. First, I was a Chinese researcher studying young Chinese adults in Britain. Not only did I share the same ethnic background with my subjects, I also possessed similar socio-economic background and history as the majority of these respondents. Furthermore, I fell into the age range of the target group of Chinese I was studying. Therefore, I typified everything I was studying.\n\nConsequently, I had the advantage of the \"insider\" (in Merton's terminology) of the 'capacity to understand' (Merton, 1972). I strongly believe that 'who I am' has been both relevant and significant to the production of knowledge. In fact, the genesis of this research project grew from my general observations of my Chinese peers. I became increasingly curious to discover more why the Chinese youth I knew appeared to be displaying a particular trend. This was a bimodal distribution whereby the indications were that the Chinese second generation were showing a propensity to either become professionals or to work in the Chinese catering industry in Britain.\n\nIn addition to being responsible for leading to the idea of this research project, my insider status within the Chinese community in Britain undoubtedly facilitated the research in a number of other ways, most imperatively in the provision of privileged access.\n\nNumerous researchers had already previously reported on the methodological difficulties of conducting research on the Chinese in Britain, such as sampling, locating, and gaining access to the Chinese. I believe that such methodological difficulties have contributed to the paucity of studies on this ethnic group in Britain, especially when compared to other ethnic groups such as those from the West Indies or those from the Indian subcontinent.\n\nIt is perhaps not an exaggeration to say that my doctoral research",

        "content_text": "23\n\nCharles Brodersen, a partner of Pustau and Co., left at the end of 1861. Two new members were admitted to replace him, Julius Menke and G.W. Siewets/van Reeseman (GG 5 Apr 1862) The latter left in 1867 and Theodore Probst was named a partner (GG 12 Jan. 1867) A relative, William Probst, was already a partner, but left at the end of 1869 (GG 8 Jan. 1870) Theodor Probst's interest ceased in 1871 (DP 8 Feb. 1871). New partners were Otto Christian Behn and Johannes F. Cordes. Dr Behn's interest ceased in 1875 and that of Mr. Cordes the next year (DP 20 Apr. 1876, 2 Feb. 1877)\n\nAfter the failure of 1878 a new company was formed. Two of the sons of the founder of the old firm became partners in the new, Wilhelm Carl Engelbrecht von Pustau, Junior, and Theodore Johannes Engelbrecht von Pustau. The firm became Reuter, Brockelmann and Co in 1898. Ernest Carl Ludwig Reuter had been a partner in Pustau and Co. from about the year 1882 and Friedrich Alexander Alfred Buesing Brockelmann was admitted to partnership five years later (DP 4 Jan. 1887) Mr. Reuter died at sea only a few months after the name of the company had been changed (DP 15 Nov. 1889), Mr. Brockelmann died in 1902, aged forty-five (CM 15 Mar. 1902).\n\nIn 1914 the office of Reuter, Brockelmann and Co. was in the Prince's Building. The partners were H. Heyn, of Hamburg, R. Fuhrmann and M. Steger.\n\nCarlowitz and Company\n\nThe first German firm to be permanently established in China was Carlowitz and Co. It was founded by Richard von Carlowitz who opened an office at Minqua's Hong in the Canton foreign factory compound in 1844. Since 1840, he had been coming to China on periodic business trips sailing around the Cape of Good Hope (DP 31 Dec. 1895). He went into partnership with Bernard Harkot in 1846 (CM 13 Mar. 1846). A branch office was opened at No. 2 D'Aguilar Street in Hong Kong in 1866. At the same time Adolphus Erbeke was admitted a partner (GG 7 July 1866). In March 1868 the Hong Kong office was moved to 15 Playa Central opposite the wharf of Douglas Lapraik and Co (DP 31 Mar. 1868).\n\nMr. Carlowitz served as the Prussian Consular Agent in Hong Kong (GG 5 Jan. 1867) By that time he had the title of Baron.
