        "content_text": "THE ROYAL ASIATIC SOCIETY (HONG KONG BRANCH) ONE-DAY CONFERENCE\n\nHong Kong: Forty Years of a Growing City Saturday 9 December 2000\n\nOPENING ADDRESS\n\nDR DAN WATERS ISO BBS, PRESIDENT\n\n235\n\n(This Conference was organised jointly by the RASHKB and the Hong Kong Museum of History to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the reconstitution of the Hong Kong Branch. The Conference was held at the Museum of History.)\n\nI am highly honoured to address you all today as we near the close of our 40th anniversary year. As you must know our Branch was re-formed in 1960, after a hiatus of a century. A very warm welcome to everyone. I have received messages from Dr Marjorie Topley, Dr James Hayes and Mr David Gilkes, all past presidents. They sent their best wishes for a successful conference. The RASHKB Group of ‘Friends’ in Britain, has sent us a congratulatory Card.\n\nIf I had been born in the computer age the chances are I would be reading this address from a portable electric brain, as a computer is termed in Cantonese. But several of us taking part in this conference were born many years earlier. Indeed some of us have lived in Hong Kong for longer than the 40-year period (1960 to 2000), which we are reviewing here today.\n\nBut continuing with my introduction: may I say that some of the most successful events our Branch has organised, especially in the 1960s and early '70s, were our one day and weekend symposia (see Appendix). A previous Honorary Secretary, R E Lawry, first proposed them when a small group of RAS members, in October 1963, was walking back to Silvermine Bay. Of course it was on a hill path as the first road on Lantao, or rather track, had only been constructed a few years earlier in order to build Shek Pik Reservoir.",

        "content_text": "248\n\nCongratulatory Speech to be delivered by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department Representative at the Conference jointly presented by Leisure and Cultural Services Department and \n\nRAS 9 December 2000 \n\nDr Waters, Dr Sinn, ladies and gentlemen, \n\nI am greatly honoured to speak at this conference jointly presented by the Royal Asiatic Society, Hong Kong Branch and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. I am also most delighted to celebrate with you the 40th anniversary of the Society's reconstitution. \n\nIn the Analects of Confucius, the master said \"At thirty I stood firm; at forty I had no more doubts.\" Stepping into the age of forty, the Royal Asiatic Society is no doubt a well-established cultural organization. I would like to express my deepest appreciation of the Society's great contribution in the promotion of the public's interest in and appreciation of Hong Kong's culture and heritage in the past few decades. \n\nWith its roots dating back to some 150 years, the Royal Asiatic Society is the oldest learned society in Hong Kong enjoying a very high academic status. Since its reconstitution in 1960, the Society has witnessed the remarkable growth of Hong Kong. It has also been playing a leading role in promoting the study of Hong Kong's history and culture through the organization of lectures and field trips as well as publications of high academic standard. It provides a very good channel for the people of Hong Kong, the expatriate community in particular, to acquire a better understanding of the arts, history, culture and customs of the territory. Nowadays, cultural tourism is much talked about all over the world. However, it is in fact nothing new, as the Society has been the prime mover of cultural tourism in Hong Kong since decades ago. \n\nAlthough the Leisure and Cultural Services Department is a relatively new government department, the Museum of History, Heritage Museum, and the Antiquities and Monuments Office now put under the Department already have a long and close relationship with the",

The room seats about 200, but it's not even half full. Those in attendance are mostly gweilos and gweipos, and with his silver-blond hair and fair skin that looks a bit flushed under the spotlight, the man giving the opening remarks on stage is indeed a gweilo. But this foreigner knows more about the place than most born and bred Hong Kongers.\n\nHis name is Dan Waters; he's president of the Royal Asiatic Society (Hong Kong Branch) — and he's giving the opening address at the Society's 40th anniversary conference, \"Hong Kong: Forty Years of a Growing City.”\n\n\"If I had been born in the computer age, the chances are I would be reading this address from a portable ‘electric brain,' as a computer is termed in Cantonese,\" Waters said. \"But several of us taking part in this conference were born many years earlier. They are a dedicated lot who have come in early on a Saturday morning to listen to these scholars and celebrate the accomplishments of the society to which they proudly belong.\n\nA glance around the hall and everyone is concentrating their attention on Waters, the longest active member of the Society.\n\n\"...An RAS member who lived in Hong Kong for approaching 30 years wrote a couple of years or so ago from his home in England: 'No, I do not miss the present-day Hong Kong one little bit. But I do miss the Hong Kong of the 1950s and '60s.' To what degree does nostalgia creep in? Let us take a wander down memory lane. What was the Colony really like when our Branch was re-constituted in 1960?...\"",
