        "content_text": "2\n\nsen and his Hong Kong experience and was based on a current study he is undertaking into the meaning and significance of Sun Yat-sen's sojourn in Hong Kong. Also in February we were pleased to welcome Mrs. Robyn McLean, assistant archivist at the Public Records Office, who, using material on her files, spoke on the efforts to locate the Chater art collection after the Japanese Occupation - an effort that proved in vain. Finally, this month Carl Smith, one of our Vice-Presidents and a well-known investigator of primary sources of Hong Kong history, spoke on the origins, functions, and network of the Hong Kong compradores.\n\nExpeditions: Hong Kong and Abroad\n\n- During the year we had one walking tour in the New Territories and two expeditions to Rajasthan. The November walking tour was one of the winter walks which David Liu of your Council arranges from time to time, and the first for members of the society. Thirteen people participated. The first expedition to Rajasthan was centred around the Pushkar Fair/Camel safari but included many other novel activities, such as desert camping, 6 days by camel to visit off-the-track villages of the Shekhawati with their frescoes, a visit to the remote desert town of Bikaner with its palaces and forts, as well as a visit to the Rajmahal Palace, Jaipur. Altogether fifteen members took the tour. The second tour, entitled \"Meet the Maharaja\", took place in January of this year and went from Delhi through Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, and Jaisalmer. Participants stayed in hotels converted from maharajas' palaces, met maharajas, and travelled on a royal saloon train. Seventeen members went on the tour. This is the first time that overseas tours have been arranged for us outside the Council, and I cannot report fully on the tours as no member of Council was able to go along. We will be pleased, however, to get the reactions and comments of those taking part. Mrs. Craig has kindly offered to show moving films of the two expeditions that she took to the Society, possibly in April - and those taking part in them will be invited to bring along their own photographs for display.\n\nPublications\n\n- The 1979 Journal (Vol. 19) was published and distributed during the year. Editorial work on the 1980 Journal was completed, and so was much of that on the 1981 Journal. Dr. James Hayes, who handed over the role of editor to Dr. David Faure last year, remained in charge of the Journal for 1980 and as advisor on that for '81. He has asked me to",

Tony and Ian are happy to continue in the capacity of coaches and consultants so you need not worry about lack of experience or guidance. This is, I believe, a worth-while project and it would be a pity if we had to give it up through lack of support. One of the fruits of the survey has been the production of Hong Kong Going and Gone which presents a selection of photographs taken in the Western sector of Victoria, brought together with commentary text. Copies of this publication by the Society are on view this evening for those who would like to see what the Survey is attempting, and/or to buy a copy. Sales of this work have gone very well and we hope very much we can produce a series, each volume devoted to a different district or topic. This will not be possible, I repeat, unless we get new people to take over the main work. So will those interested please contact Tony Rydings (our librarian) or Ian Diamond during the evening or ring Mrs. Robyn McLean at 5-260031 as soon as possible.\n\nMembership\n\nWe always welcome new members to the Society. Our application forms, of which we have brought along a number tonight for guests of members who want to join, have spaces for the names of proposers and seconders. But nowadays, with the turnover of people in Hong Kong so great, it is not always easy to find members to act in this capacity. Our policy of late, then, has been to invite prospective members to send in their form and subscription and then to introduce themselves to us at one of our lectures. As you have seen from our A.G.M. notice, we have decided to propose an increase in subscriptions. I must say we made this decision reluctantly. We are not a profit-making society but we do have to cover our costs, which have been rising like everything else in Hong Kong. In fact, our membership fee has risen very little and very slowly over the twenty-two years since we have been going. It was last raised in 1975, from $30 to $50; that was seven years ago. Later, our Treasurer, David Gilkes, will explain in more detail our present position in his report.\n\nTotal membership of the Society as at February 28, 1982, was 556, consisting of six honorary members, 112 local life members, 324 local ordinary and 41 overseas ordinary members, and 73 overseas life members. The May 1986 visit was so popular that it was repeated in December. Arrangements were also made during the year for members to participate in a Bhutan tour for early 1987 arranged by Mrs. Peggy Craig, one of our members and a well-known travel specialist. \n\nThe Council noted the high quality of the programmes and wishes to express its deep appreciation to the lecturers, visit and tour leaders. Special thanks go to Elizabeth Sinn, Chairman of the Programme Sub-committee, and her helpers for such a satisfactory outcome. The Council also wishes to thank the Curator, Hong Kong Museum of History, Kowloon Park, for the regular use of its well-equipped lecture hall, and the assistance of his staff there. \n\nThe Council continue to discuss venues for lectures. Mindful of the fact that not everyone finds it easy or, dare I say natural to go to lectures at the Museum of History at Kowloon Park, Tsimshatsui, we try to find venues on Hong Kong Island. Some suitable places have been suggested, but in most cases require more advance booking than we are usually able to contrive. However, we will try to improve on the position. \n\nAdministration \n\nDuring the year, we benefitted from the conscientious, thoughtful and strong support given by our new Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Rukhshana Daroowala who worked closely with the Hon. Secretary, Mrs. Robyn McLean. It was therefore a double blow when, unexpectedly, Mrs. Daroowala had to leave Hong Kong early in 1987 when her banker husband was posted to Canada, and at more or less the same time Robyn McLean left Hong Kong to return to Australia after fourteen years' residence, the last six of \n\nix",

The departure of both ladies was suitably marked by a cocktail reception and presentations on behalf of our membership.\n\nI am relieved and thankful to report that both posts were immediately filled by two other ladies who are contributing in the same dedicated manner. Mrs. Anita Wilson, who with her husband John is a current member of the Society, took over from Mrs. McLean as Hon. Secretary, whilst Mrs. Sharon Bruce took up the Assistant Secretaryship. Both she and her husband Phillip are long standing members.\n\nSymposium on the Future of the Society\n\nIn my past two annual reports I touched on the possibility of holding a seminar to discuss the present and future of the Society in Hong Kong. We, as well as other local groups, will be affected in one way or another by the Sino-British Agreement ratified in December 1984 which arranges for the return of Hong Kong in June 1997 and its establishment as a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It is, in any case, desirable to take stock of our position now, to ensure that we are organized to meet the needs of the present transitional period and the changes which are evolving in this vibrant and progressive city.\n\nThe seminar has taken time to arrange because Councillors have been more than usually busy in the interim, but preparations are now well in hand, and it will now be held on Saturday 9th May, 1987. Our member, Mr. Ian Deane, with some assistance from myself and others, has nearly completed the arrangements for this important event. A special feature of the preparations has been a detailed questionnaire to which over 120 members responded, giving many valuable comments and suggestions. The Vice-Chancellor of Hong Kong University, Dr. Wang Gungwu, has kindly agreed to give the keynote address and other prominent speakers are likely to assist. Background papers will be distributed to members before the meeting in order to make the best use of the time available. They will cover such subjects as our organization, programmes and financing, the possibility of a bi-lingual operation, whether a change in the name of our Society is in order in preparation...",

        "content_text": "113\n\nDuring the afternoon on Wednesday, 30th September the Lindbergh's Lockheed Sirius aircraft landed on the River and was made fast astern of HERMES, a short while later being hoisted onto her flight deck.\n\nThe following day two aircraft from HERMES flew off on patrol, as did the Colonel and Mrs Lindbergh in their Sirius.\n\nUnfortunately on Friday, the 2nd, after hoisting out the Colonel's machine at 0945 hours, and when endeavouring to unhook, the machine capsized alongside.14\n\nWith a strong current running in the river it was necessary to apply a certain amount of throttle so that as the aircraft took the water it forged ahead in such a way as to permit the crane hook to be disengaged. The Colonel had misjudged the manoeuvre, quickly the current had taken hold, the aircraft twisted around broadside to the flow, the port wing dipped into the river, the machine capsized, and the two occupants were thrown into the water. Happily the possibility of such a mishap occurring had been foreseen. On this occasion the motor sampan from the Vice Admiral's Flagship, the gunboat BEE,15 was standing by. Instantly the sampan crew rescued the Colonel and his wife. Fortunately the aircraft still was hooked on and under the direction of Commander Baxter salvage operations commenced immediately. The Lockheed was righted and hoisted in at 1035 hours. Damage was found to be minimal. However, being of wooden construction whereas the frames of the aircraft in the ship were of metal, no suitable spare parts could be found onboard.\n\nThe Lindbergh's both made light of their misadventure with the Colonel quick to take the blame for the accident. As Vice Admiral MacLean was to state:\n\n'I was very much impressed by the unassuming manner of Colonel Lindbergh and they certainly both won the liking and esteem of all who came into contact with them here.
