        "content_text": "286\n\nCHOI CHI CHEUNG\n\nThe Cheung lineage was not prosperous until the Tao Kuang (*) period. Ancestor Yao-chih (2) of the 2nd sub-lineage became a successful merchant, and through his generous donation, an Ancestral Hall for the whole lineage was built. The Ancestral Hall of the Ya-kang segment was built in the middle of the Chia Ching period by the effort of ancestor I-pi ( ), brother of Ah-lum's grandfather (see clan record, Tz'u yu pu (3) section, Tz'u T'ang Chi (2) sub-section pp. 1-4). Though the lineage had several National School students (B), no one succeeded in the official examinations until the end of the Ch'ing dynasty when they had three chüren (A). Two of them were Ah-lum's sons. Ah-lum's father was also a National School Student who earned his living by teaching in the villages nearby (see the biography of Ah-lum's father in the Clan record, Chi-ching pu (it) section, Hang Chuang ((HA) sub-section p. 5).\n\nThis man is not otherwise mentioned in the Clan record.\n\nAccording to Ah-lum's statement as given in court, \"he first came to the colony at only 18 years of age. He was first employed by Mr. Bigham, who went to California; after that by Mr. Franklyn; then by Murrow, Stephenson & Co.; then by Mr. De Silver, for whom he made biscuits, as well as did other business see: British Parliamentary Papers, China, no. 24: Hong Kong, P. 183. (= BPP 24:183).\n\nThe Russell was owned by Russell & Co., and the Shamrock by Mr. Xavier, c.f. BPP 24:170 and 173.\n\nSee BPP 24:164–184. According to the Clan Record Tsa Chi-pu() section, Pa-yu (if) sub-section, p. 1, Ah-lum had businesses in Saigon, Haiphong, Comuponton, and in Nha Trang in Kwangnam (ÂM NHIỀU).\n\n13 According to the clan record, we know that one of Ah-lum's sons was buried in the free cemetery of Haiphong (), and another was buried in the free cemetery of the Canton City Association in Vung Tau, Vietnam (#).\n\n14 In 1884, when Chen passed through Vietnam, Ah-lum was chief manager (*) of the China Merchants Steam Navigation Co. in Vietnam.         "content_text": "experience, came relatively easily. \"Life to them is one big gamble, just for the fun of it,” he commented on his co-workers, \"but there is no purpose behind what they are doing, not for themselves nor for their families.\" Those he felt uncomfortable with openly ridiculed him as \"country-boy” and “socialist scum,” and blamed him for lowering their pay. I asked whether he planned to do something with his mechanical skills. He could only give me a bitter smile: who would want a farm machinist in Hong Kong; his family was in the restaurant trade; his father was a cook in China, and his uncle was a master baker; he would feel obliged to learn the family trade; after all, the skill to make Cantonese luncheon delicacies was sought after in the West; his family expected him to migrate to the U.S. one day to start a restaurant of his own. At the time, he had one purpose in mind to learn the skill from his uncle and to get out of the miserable working environment. He relished our conversations about family and friends in the commune (whom we knew through fieldwork). My frequent trips to the commune served as a physical though somewhat invisible bridge between him and home. In a sense, I and my research assistants became part of his emotional network.\n\nAs months passed by, changes in him were noticeable. He permed his hair. He also got rid of the oversized leather jacket and bell-bottomed trousers. With his slightly pointed shoes and loose sweater, he had acquired the \"grease look\" so popular among Hong Kong's working youth at the time. He talked less about his friends at the commune but more about barbecue picnics at Repulse Bay with co-workers. He also wanted to move to another restaurant in order to gain a more comprehensive view of the trade. He seriously discussed the thought of opening a bakery with friends in a housing estate. He had finally enrolled in an evening English class. It seemed that within a short time, he had established his own networks and orientations in Hong Kong by affiliating with a more forward-looking group within the working class youth culture. He became less attached to the social network provided by his relatives. Instead, he enjoyed his economic independence with friends and asserted his own goals in life quite apart from family obligations.\" He felt he was finally sinking his roots in a society that was oblivious to its precarious existence.",

        "content_text": "19\n\nReichmann's application for the Grand Hotel was not granted as he was a German national. He applied again in 1915 but to no avail. Though he was unsuccessful, the application suggests he was not interned with his fellow countrymen. After peace returned, he again sought a decision on his application for naturalisation (CO129/455, p37, 11 July 1919).\n\nI have presented this material in what some might consider excessive detail because it relates a connected history of accommodation for travelling and resident Germans from 1859, when Petersen's German Tavern was opened, to 1931, when his daughter retired from the management of the Station Hotel in Kowloon and closed its doors.\n\nCafe Weissmann\n\nThe Cafe Weissmann opened in 1904. In 1914/15 the name was changed to Wiseman, a less Germanic spelling. Lane, Crawford and Co. had acquired a controlling interest in Weissmann Ltd, so its Cafe was not considered to be alien enemy property. The licence for spirits was transferred from Rembold Ekhardt, who had held it from 1909, to Ellen H.K. King,\n\nAccording to Jarrett, the author of the column \"Old Hong Kong\" in the South China Morning Post (23 Sept. 1933), Hans Weissmann was a ship's baker who began business near the Bowrington Canal. If this is accurate, he must have begun his Hong Kong career at the Hong Kong and China Bakery Co. It was a limited company with the controlling interest being held by Lane, Crawford and Co. Mr. Weissmann opened a restaurant in a small room in the Beaconsfield Arcade in 1904, but he soon moved to the south-east corner of Queen's Road and Wyndham Street. Here, in addition to his \"Refreshment Room\", he had a \"Tiffin Room\" at No. 1 Wyndham Street. At the same time, the business became a limited company (DP20, 27 Apr 1905). The management of the restaurant was taken over by Carl Fiedler in 1908. A year later, the business was moved to No. 14 Des Voeux Road Central. Mr. Fiedler was not long after replaced by Rembold Ekhardt, who conducted the business under various names until 1914.\n\nCafe Weissman became Cafe Wiseman in 1914. No. 14 Queen's Road was redeveloped in 1926 as the Exchange Building. Lane, Crawford and Co. had its store there and for several years Cafe Wiseman became the",
