However, by 1944 the charcoal trucks were being operated successfully over the Luhsien road with its high altitude as well as all the other routes. Charcoal was obtainable in most villages and was cheap in the mountain areas and the cost, per ton carried, was 1/5 of that of alcohol. The charcoal burners carried the major load of supplies through 1944 and the first part of 1945.\n\nThe successful Burma campaign of autumn 1944, the opening of the Ledo road and the petrol pipeline laid along it made a great difference to the Unit transport systems. Not only was the Unit allocated 25 Canadian W.D. 3-ton Dodge trucks in the summer of 1945 from ARC and UNRAA, but it was also able to obtain P.O.L. (Petrol, Oil and Lubrication) supplies from the US army free of charge. To quote from a letter written 10/6/45 “It was a great moment when at Kunming, Rupert (Stanley) and I drove up in a truck to the P.O.L. station and pulled up beside a real petrol pump (and bright red at that too) and said to the Sergeant \"Fill'er up\" and he filled her up to the tune of 22 gallons US. When I told him it was 34 years since I'd done that he registered the usual GI amazement that anyone could stand the place that long”.\n\nSystem Performance\n\nThe cargo carried by the system was in three categories: Medical and Relief supplies for NHA, IRC, ARC etc.; FAU maintenance and fuel supplies; and return cargoes. The Government transport administration ruled that no trucks should travel empty and on return journeys must take Government, usually military, cargoes. The Unit had a special pass, as a Christian pacifist organization, exempting it from taking soldiers or weapons and instead usually had cargoes of salt from the Yangtse valley south to Kweichow and Yunnan.\n\nThe system performance figures in terms of kilometre tons for the 4 years, as far as they are at present available, are given in Table VII. The number of trucks available on average through the years are given, and from this it will be seen that the operating efficiency in terms of kilometre tons per truck per year steadily increased. This was due to:---\n\n1) increased efficiency of the Charcoal truck operations, more than compensating for the deterioration of the diesel trucks",

At high tide under favourable conditions of light it takes on quite a remarkable beauty; viewed at close quarters it is even more remarkably ramshackle. The houses are grouped together in small villages, being connected by precarious plank walkways, and there the inhabitants carry on their multifarious activities in much the same way as if they were on land.\n\nNOTES\n\n1 See e.g. O. Slides were collected each month, the cells were scraped off, extracted with acetone, and the chlorophyll estimated as in (i).\n\nc) Observations on plants\n\nThe bunds surrounding the kei wais and the islands carry a fairly dense growth of plants. In both cases, the main species are Kandelia candel (L.) Druce, Phragmites karka (Retz.) Trin., Acanthus ilicifolius L., and the fern Acrostichum aureum L. The first three species grow around the margins of the bunds and islands and thus overhang the water.\n\nThroughout the experimental period, observations were made on the stages of growth of Kandelia and Phragmites. Litter fall from Kandelia was estimated by surrounding the lower half of two bushes with a funnel-shaped structure of fine nylon netting; the litter was collected from the net each month, and the quantity expressed on a dry weight basis. Probable litter production by Phragmites was estimated in August 1978 when the plants were becoming senescent: the stems and leaves within 4 × 1 m2 quadrats were harvested separately and oven-dried.\n\nd) Decomposition of submerged Kandelia leaves\n\nMatched sets of senescent leaves were immersed in the kei wai either in plastic mesh bags (1 × 1 mm mesh) or in plastic vials with 2 mm holes punched through them. Individual bags and vials were collected at weekly intervals. Leaves from the bags were used to study the progress of fragmentation and were analysed by the Kjeldahl method to determine their nitrogen content and thus their approximate protein content. Leaves from the vials were used to follow changes in dry weight and content of hot water.\n\nPage 210\n\nPage 211",

By letter of 8 September 1899 Mr Read informed Sir Ralph that three of the cannon had gone to the Tower. The Department of Medieval and Later Antiquities possesses an acknowledgement from the ordnance office of the Tower of London to the Director and Principal Librarian of the British Museum, dated 17 July 1899, that three guns from Benin City had been received.\n\nNOTES\n\n(1) Upon which cf. Robert D. Smith's \"A 16th century Portuguese bronze breech-loading swivel gun,\" Militaria. Revista de Cultura Militar N.o 7, Madrid, 1995, pp.197-205 and my \"A 16th century Portuguese swivel gun in the British Museum,\" Lisbon, 1995, where I identified what the writing on this piece means.\n\n(2) Upon these cf. Howard L. Blackmore, The Armouries of the Tower of London. I. Ordnance, London, 1976, pp. 154, 170 and 171 (entries Nos 204, 238 and 239)\n\n(3) cf. page 154; No.204 of Howard L. Blackmore's catalogue (XIX.114 in the Royal Armouries). Mr. Blackmore states that it is an iron gun 3 feet 3 inches long. He portrays it in the catalogue and believes it was made in China in the 18th or early 19th century. He notes: \"An inscription in Chinese characters engraved by the trunnions refers to the weight of the gun and probably gives the names of the officials who supervised its manufacture; it is, however, too worn for accurate translation.” Often judgements of what can be read in old inscriptions are too hastily made. I do not know if that would be the case here. How this piece arrived in Benin City, and when, is presently anybody's guess.\n\n(4) A verb in the past tense, some four letters of which I cannot read, appears to be written here.",

"content_text": "Interaction with local inhabitants is a crucial aspect and an important element in subsequent government land policy both for development and environment conservation. The interests of indigenous people must be respected; moreover, it should also be remembered that one effective way of conserving the environment or cultural landscape is to let the local people protect and care for their own heritage. The success of conservation and development often depends on effective communication and cooperation between these parties. As in the case shown in Tai Long Wan and Pak Lap, the support from the local community within the development is a key element in developing the homeland of those indigenous people, and the sustainability of a development often depends on this factor.\n\nNotes and References\n\nSee A.
