AN EPILOGUE
By a lady, on the night of May 6 1852
“Most courteous friends, whose presence here has been
The inspiration of our Mimic Scene
So ready to be pleased, so slow to chide
Methinks your patience has been often tried
By dull forgetfulness, by blundering guesses
Lost cues, spoiled jokes, ill fitting scenes and dresses.
Thanks for the merry laugh that cheered our hearts
For loud applause that bade us top our parts.
For mirth, that taking all things for the best
Made even a blunder seem a clever jest.
For kindness that made all our labour less
And added double value to success.
Accept with these our brief adieux we pray
'T is thought expedient why I need not say
(A lady's never asked to give a reason)
To close our Theatre for the busy season!
We trust we only part awhile however
To meet you here ere long, as kind as ever
When we again your tried support may claim
And prove that to deserve it is our aim.”
