VENERAL

This office continued to be responsible for the electrical and mechanical engineering of Government projects with the exception of those of the Water Authority. A service was provided to other Departments and other Offices of the Public Works Department, the Office acting as consultants and contractors on electrical and mechanical matters, including the maintenance of most of the electro-mechanical equipment used by Government and the whole of its fleet of 3,912 vehicles.

8.02 During the year submissions were in preparation for the completion of the reorganisation of the Workshops which was delayed by financial restrictions in the previous year. These submissions also include the creation of a new Plant Operation and Maintenance Division dealing with waste disposal, hospital services, airport services and municipal services. The existing Operations and Maintenance Division will then be divided into two separate Divisions, one dealing with Workshops and one dealing with Plant.

8.03

Efficiency has continued to increase although it has not always been possible, due to lack of staff, to keep pace with the expansion of the Office's responsibilities. Where such cases have occurred, maintenance and operation has had to be put out to contract pending the approval of additional staff.

The Office was represented on various committees including:
