developed parts of Hong Kong Island.
Further progress in producing 1/1,000 sheets of the Island is dependent on metric contours becoming available.
Thus 1/600 sheets continue to be revised and used for land administration purposes.
1/1,200 scale sheets
7.50 Due to the intensity of development now manifested within the New Territories, this scale continues in use for many tasks. Since metrication of the 1/1,200 sheets to the metric format at 1/1,000 with metric contours and spot heights cannot hope to keep pace with the demand initiated by the intense pattern of development, a provisional series has been resorted to for particular areas. This is quite simply brought about by enlarging the existing 1:1,200 sheets to 1:1,000 and recasting this coverage to conform to the new metric sheet lines.
Revision (Small Scale)
7.51 A considerable amount of major revision of 1:10,000 maps was carried out, mainly for incorporation in the new 1:20,000 metric series. There was also a good deal of revision at other scales, undertaken in the form of final checks before printing.
Site Surveys
7.52 The total number of site surveys for Government projects showed an increase of 36% over the previous year, reflecting the considerable increase in Government building activities.
Title Surveys
7.53 The Survey Branch is responsible for the production of cadastral records and the subsequent documentation prepared from surveys effected to define and delineate land boundaries within Hong Kong, as required by the lot owner, his agent or by the Land Officer.
7.54 This work is carried out solely by this Branch, as a system of boundary definition by private practising Registered Surveyors, as required by law in many other parts of the world, does not exist in Hong Kong. This highly responsible work is performed in Hong Kong by departmentally trained Government technicians working under the close supervision of professionally qualified land surveyors.
7.55 There was a 30% increase in the number of cadastral surveys completed compared with last year, reflecting the increased development now taking place, particularly in the New Territories.
The P.W.D. Survey Training School
7.56 Established in 1963, the Survey School is responsible for the training of Surveying Assistants (Land) and (Engineering) and Cartographic Assistants for both the Public Works Department and the New Territories Administration.
7.57 During the year several Departments made use of the School's training facilities. The New Territories Administration, Buildings Ordinance
