The volume of sales of Crown land in the various categories of uses continued at a higher level than in the previous year and the revenue from this source rose correspondingly, the total for the year from sales by auction and tender amounting to $202.5 million compared with $61.9 million in the previous year.
Urban Estate Division
7.05
The Urban Estate Division is divided into two sections, one each for Hong Kong and Kowloon. The Division deals with all sales, new leases and allocation of Crown land on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon and New Kowloon, and the general administration and control of Crown land in the urban areas. During the year there were 48 lots sold by public auction or tender compared with 30 during the previous year.

Apart from sales by public auction and tender, there was a continuing requirement for land needed for Government, institutional or community projects such as schools, hospitals, police stations, fire stations, low cost housing, parks and playgrounds. Land for these purposes is granted by private treaty or allocated to Government Departments and during the year 12 private grants were made and there were 165 Government Land Allocations.

During the year under review, the clearance of Crown land required for development and Government projects continued. As in previous years, this division played an important role in the maintenance of Crown land. Sites not required for immediate development were either fenced off or kept under observation by regular inspections so as to avoid unauthorised occupation.
Property Management/Modification Division
7.08 The Property Management Section of this Division is responsible for the letting and management of premises owned but not occupied by Government. It conducts negotiations for the letting of Government buildings and piers which are not required for the time being for Government purposes or which are intended for non-Government use. It also manages buildings on former leased land which have reverted to the ownership of the Crown either through
