The improvement in the property market, noted during 1975, was maintained throughout 1976, and the system of selling Crown land regularly by auction and tender in accordance with a planned programme continued. A total of 48 lots was disposed of in this way, and whilst in the first quarter only 5 lots were sold, this rate increased throughout the year. In the final quarter 19 lots were sold. Auction sales were well attended and bidding was brisk. Of the total area of land sold there was a fair division between private residential, non-industrial and industrial/godown.

Some significant sales took place during the year. The first available sites at Wan Chai Reclamation and Tsim Sha Tsui East were in much demand, and in November 1976 I.L. 8390 at Ann Chai, 4,340 square metres in area, was sold for $120 million. This equates to $27,647 per square metre. In December 1976 the first site at Tsim Sha Tsui East, K.I.L. 10474, 2,560 square metres in area sold for $59 million, equating to $23,046 per square metre. A further lot at Tsim Sha Tsui East sold in January 1977 fetched $27,641 per square metre. All these lots were restricted to non-industrial purposes. During November 1976 an industrial lot at Aberdeen was sold at $7.6 million equating to $15,846 per square metre. The demand for lots at Chung Hom Kok for residential purposes continued and all were subject to keen competition among bidders.
