The Military works and Maintenance Division, also headed by a Chief Building Services Engineer, is sub-divided into three sections each with a complement of staff similar to the sections of the Civil New Works Division. Two sections support Architectural Divisions IV & V for Building Services works under the Defence Cost Agreement and the Reprovisioning of Headquarters British Forces at H.M.S. Tamar and the Royal Air Force at Sek Kong. Their duties are similar to those undertaken in the Civil New Works Division. In addition, where possible this Division also supports the Civil Engineering Office for works in connection with the Kowloon-Canton Railway. The third Section supports the Maintenance Branch of this Office and is responsible for the maintenance of electrical, lift, gas, fire service, hot water boilers, building automation and communal aerial distribution systems in existing Government and H.B.M. Services establishments.
Building Services Branch is constantly exploring the most economic use of materials available and methods of increasing the competitiveness of tenders.

In addition to projects designed within the Architectural Office, the Branch is responsible for the design, specification and the supervision of the installation of Building Services in buildings designed by private architects on behalf of the Government. The Branch has also commissioned Consultant Engineers for building engineering services estimated to cost $41.5M in eight major projects which are at present in various stages of investigation, design or progress. Assistance has also been given to the Education Department on the subject of building services installations in grant-in-aid and subsidized schools, to the Hong Kong Housing Society, subvented organisations, and the Universities and Polytechnic Grants Committee.

During the year, contracts and sub-contracts were let for building services in New Works to a total value of $68.93M and work to the value of $18.99M was ordered on the electrical, lift and other maintenance contracts. In addition, standard fittings and other materials to the value of $5.59M were ordered through the Government Supplies Department for incorporation in the works.
