Other surveys undertaken included a speed study on the section of Castle Peak Road between Tuen Mun and Yuen Long, traffic counts on Tai Po Road and Lion Rock Tunnel Road in connection with the disruption of K.C.R. train service, a car and person trip generation survey at 23 selected buildings in the Mid-Levels area, a survey of traffic movements and passenger occupancies near Ocean Park, directional counts at ten major junctions in Kwun Tong for the planning of traffic diversions in conjunction with Mass Transit Railway construction and a car journey time survey in the Area Traffic Control area to compare journey times and delays in the West Kowloon Corridor with and without computer control at signal-controlled junctions.

The total number of vehicles registered on 31.3.1977 was 194,582, an increase of 3.5% over the year. All the four cordons and eleven screenlines in Hong Kong experienced an increase in average daily traffic over the preceding year. The highest traffic flow occurred on Prince Edward Road near Choi Hung Road where the average daily traffic for 1976 was 121,970 vehicles per day, an increase of 11.4% over the figure for 1975.

The Traffic Control and Surveillance Unit (previously Area Traffic Control Unit) is responsible for the operation and extension of the West Kowloon Area Traffic Control system and the provision of advice on matters relating to traffic surveillance and control on restricted access roads.

The installation and commissioning of the Area Traffic Control system was completed. The system became operational in March 1977, controlling 83 sets of traffic light signals on the heavily trafficked roads in West Kowloon. It is expected that the system will provide more efficient
