The construction of the new railway bridge and re-alignment of Tai Po Road at milestone 17% was nearing completion while the improvement of Tai Po Road from the Hong Kong Chinese University to Tai Po was started during the year.
Projects under planning included the improvement of sections of Tai Po Road between Ho Tung Lau and the Chinese University of Hong Kong and between Sha Tin and Tai Wo Ping in Kowloon, a new trunk route from Island House in Yuen Chau Tsai to Lam Kam Road junction, the improvement and re-alignment of the existing Tai Po Road and Castle Peak Road between Tai Po and Yuen Long, the widening of Ting Kok Road from Tai Po town centre to Tai Po Industrial Estate, and the improvement of Luk Keng Road.

In Kwai Chung, the provision of roads and drains for Kwai Shing Housing Estate was completed while the roads and drainage works in Areas 10G, 10H and 37B and at Ha Kwai Chung Housing Estate were nearing completion. To cope with the development programme in this area, construction started on the flyover linking Areas 10 and 11, a new link road between Kwai Fuk Road and Texaco Road to replace the existing narrow Gin Drinkers Bay Road, the Stage I roads and drainage works for Lai King Headland Development and the access roads to Kwai Chung incinerator. The construction of a footbridge over Castle Peak Road at Chung On Street in Tsuen Wan was also in hand. Planning and design for the Tsuen Wan By-pass between Kwai Chung Road and Texaco Road, the grade-separated intersection at the junction of Castle Peak Road and Texaco
