1.05 Commenced during the year was the construction of Morrison Hill Indoor Games Centre. This building, which is being built partly from public donations, is intended to be a memento of the visit to Hong Kong, in May, 1975, of Her Majesty the Queen. When completed, towards the end of 1980, the Centre will contain a lower hall area to be used for the training of local sportsmen and women and a multi-purpose upper stadium, with seating accommodation for 3,900 spectators, in which sporting events such as table-tennis, basketball, badminton, boxing and wrestling matches will be presented. The main stadium will also be able to accommodate exhibitions and pageants.
1.06 In January 1977 His Excellency the Governor laid the foundation stone for the MacLehose Dental Centre, situated in the Morrison Hill area of Hong Kong Island. This building, which is scheduled for completion in the Autumn of 1978, will house a training school for dental nurses, a school children's dental clinic and the dental headquarters of the Medical and Health Department, which will move from its present accommodation in the Wanchai Dental Clinic. The completion of this project will mark a milestone in Government's measures to expand and improve the level of dental treatment provided for the community.
1.07 Mr. A. de O. Sales, Chairman of the Urban Council, laid the foundation stone for the Urban Council Chamber and Offices building adjacent to the City Hall in May 1976 and the building was ready for occupation and use just prior to the end of the year under review. The building contains a Council Chamber with accommodation for the public and the media and equipped with simultaneous translation facilities. Also included are secretariat and office facilities to assist the proper functioning of the Council. A time capsule was buried beneath the ground floor public garden area. This capsule, which is expected to be uncovered and opened in not less than 100 years, contains a number of contemporary items such as coins, newspapers and minutes of meetings of the Council.
1.08 The declared cost of private building works completed during the year amounted to $1,948 million, which is an all-time record. The total number of new building proposals approved was 728, compared with 582 the previous year.
1.09 Despite the exceptionally heavy rainfall during the summer months good progress on highway construction was maintained.
