The Highways Office is responsible for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the public highways system together with the associated sewerage and drainage works, for initiating traffic management and traffic surveillance schemes, and for conducting all traffic and transport surveys which provide the basic data for traffic engineering planning and design. It is headed by the Principal Government Highway Engineer, who is assisted by Government Highway Engineers and the Highways Office Planning Group, which was formed to improve productivity by increasing output with the minimum expenditure of time and money. The Office is now sub-divided into eight divisions plus the Traffic Control and Surveillance Unit and the Planning Group in Headquarters.
