ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL OFFICE

Principal Government Electrical & Mechanical Engineer:

J.A. WALLACE, C.Eng., F.I.Mech.E., M.B.I.M.

Government Electrical and Mechanical Engineer:

J. LIM, C.Eng., F.I.Mech.E., M.B.I.M. (1.4.75 to 13.5.75)

G.J. OSBORNE, C.Eng., F.I.Mech.E., M.B.I.M. (14.5.75 to 31.3.76)

8.01 GENERAL

This Office continued to be responsible for the electrical and mechanical engineering of Government projects, with the exception of those of the Water Supplies Department. A service was provided to other Departments and other offices of the Public Works Department, the Office acting as consultants and contractors on electrical and mechanical matters, including the maintenance of most of the electro-mechanical equipment used by Government and the whole of its fleet of 3,910 vehicles.

8.02

Continued financial restrictions further delayed the implementation of the complete re-organisation of the Workshops. During the period under review it can be said that more equipment was maintained than in the previous period but the demand for service dropped on account of financial and other restrictions. This was particularly evident with vehicles, resulting in extended maintenance periods in some instances. However, an enforced increase in efficiency is evident, due to a reduction of approximately 5% in staff.

8.03 Because equipment and vehicle replacements were not forthcoming, extension of service life, where possible, was made at the expense of reliability. A generally lower standard and, from a maintenance viewpoint, lower cost effectiveness, had to be accepted.

8.04

The Office was represented on various committees including
