This Branch is under the overall control of the Government Building Services Engineer and in order to meet the additional commitment imposed by the Defence Costs Agreement 1976/83, a second post of Chief Building Services Engineer was created during the year under review. Branch is arranged in two Divisions, each headed by a Chief Building Services Engineer and is sub-divided into a total of eight Sections. These Sections, four support Architectural Divisions on major and minor New Works projects, two support Architectural Divisions on Defence Works projects, and one Section undertakes modernization and improvement works in the older Government buildings which are beyond the scope of normal maintenance works. An eighth Section supports the Government Maintenance Surveyor and undertakes the supervision of the maintenance of all Building Services works in Government buildings and military establishments. Each Section is responsible for the design, specification and supervision of the installation (or maintenance) of electrical, lift, air-conditioning, refrigeration, mechanical services, liquefied petroleum and town gas services, fire service, and communal aerial broadcast distribution systems in Government buildings (including Government Housing Estates) and military establishments. Now included in the scope of Building Services works is a scheme for the installation of communal aerial broadcast distribution systems in existing Government Housing Estates. The New Works site supervisory staff is organised into ten Districts in line with the building site supervisory staff of the Architectural Branch. The Maintenance Division, headed by a Senior Building Services Engineer, has a similar complement of staff, including site supervisory staff.

In addition to projects designed within the Architectural Office, the Branch is responsible for the design, specification and supervision of the installation of Building Services in buildings designed by private architects on behalf of the Government. The Branch has also commissioned consultant engineers for building engineering services, estimated to cost $37
